The worst soldered joint I've ever seen
The boiler I'm re-piping should be in the Hall of Shame.
Just an example are the photos attached. > More to come < as I'm finishing up tomorrow. Hard to believe this thing worked at all. No heat EVER on the second floor. No circulation even though they had a 007 working hard 24/7. Bad or no piping to CI radiators converted from 2 pipe steam in the 70's. Humans lived here!
More photos to follow. You won't believe this!

I also
could not open them Gary.
It is nice to hear that someone soldered a joint worse than my first one. With no experience, my late Father-in-law, sent me to the truck to solder a c/fem drop ell onto a riser. Flux, what was flux?0 -
That's just poetic in... it's badness!
I could open the pics, though they seem to be the same one. I guess it's yet another illustration of how rust/crud can be your friend by plugging all the holes you have left behind in your soldering job!
Also, If my eyes are serving me correctly, that expansion tank should have snapped the tubing it is hanging from since it doesn't seem to have any other means of support. Kinda reminds me of that botched "a boiler is a boiler" Vitodens install in the DC area two years ago.
I look forward to the repaired system pics. It makes the differences between a good and a hack install all the more graphic.
PS: It is possible to make silk from a sow's ear! The founder of ADL did that in the 1920's... then he turned the silk into a period womens purse.0 -
After. Not exactly a purse of silk but ,,,
Everyone should be able to view the pix now,
At least it's piped rcorrectly now.

Constantine,
Exactly what I thought when I first saw this. Expansion tank fails >fills with water as they all will do some day> BREAKS off the poorly soldered joint at the lateral and makes the water department here in Natick very happy for copious amounts of flow (useage ) without any need for disposal of sewage down the drain. Dangeling tank also reminded me of Dan Foly's Vitodens mop up job.
BTW. It's not possible to make a REAL silk anything from a pig's ear. It's easy enough to do this math. Silk, real silk has to come from a silkworm. Unless a silkworm actually lived in the ear of a pig I don't see how this could be;-)

Well, there is a first time for everything...
... Mr. Little was renowned for his chemical abilities. And silk is derived from some sort of organic compound that silkworms produce to create their cocoons. What prevents modern scientists from discovering how the silkworm process works, then deriving the source material from sow's ears? Nothing, really.
Allegedly, quite a few oinker ears were pulverized to produce the necessary silk precursors... however, IIRC, the silk Mr. Little produced is not rayon or some other synthetic material, it is the real deal. Cost being no object, this non-commercially-viable adventure at defying conventional wisdom was simply a long series of organic chemistry steps.
In the 1980's ADL had a informal contest to see who could make a Lead Ballon fly highest... Three made it into the air. They had lots of contests like that. Must have been the high percentage of MIT grads on campus...0 -
I hope who ever did that solder job, found something else to do for a living. And hopefully not a job working for NASA.0 -
joints
See that kind of crap every day, really sad!!!!!!!!0 -
What proble??
Looks fine to me! I see that from a lot of "pros(?)" in my area...I do better and I am not a plumber.
Truly sad. Saw that before on a viessman..Great equipment..hack install.0 -
That looks fine to you Mike?
Curious. You see that from a lot of Pro's in your area? You're not a plumber and you see this from Pro's?
Show me.
You're right it is sad. Reminds us all of Dan Foley's botched Vito job. I was wondering what all of the solder was doing on the floor of the basement. Must have been at least a whole foot of spent solder pooled on the floor in nugets at my feet.
Didn't leak.
Gary.
