New boiler

I have a boiler that is probably from the 1940's. My plumber said I should replace it in the Spring for efficiency. We have steam heat and our water heater is off of our boiler. That has a slow leak in it but they advised me not to replace the water heater until I replace the whole unit. The problem is my boiler is insulated with asbestos and that will have to be removed. Does anyone know how much time and money I am looking at? I am totally naive when it comes to all of this. I also have radiators, I should keep them right? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

can vary according to how much there is and how easy it is to get at. You might want to call several contractors in your area.

You definitely want to keep your steam heat and radiators. They were designed and installed together and work best that way. However, there are probably some things you can do to the system now to increase its efficiency and help you save for the boiler replacement.

    Asbestos

Be sure to contact a reputable CERTIFIED asbestos abatement contractor. Contact the EPA if in doubt. I have seen some that have monkeyed with this stuff and endangered a lot of people and property, not to mention breaking a bunch of federal laws. Be careful.
