Steam boiler replacement , low ceiling

blasting the return pipe apart , and doing who know's what with the crappy condensate . We pulled the return out of the floor and replaced it with copper .

We also noticed 2 new main vents , neither one in the best of places on the main .

Comments

  • The old boiler was removed for us

and I'm very glad . This removal must've been a pain , being in a pit , in a basement with a 5 1/2 foot celing , and narrow stairs that look like they're about to split apart . I don't know what was in there , but the near boiler pipework was not up to spec , so to say .
  • We squeezed a Peerless

ECT 3 down the narrow stairs and into the pit . There was no choice but to use a drop header for the 28 inch dimension ( I would drop it any way ) . We also increased the boiler main size from the minimum 2 inches to 3 inches . Kenny had a little spare time so he moved one of the main vents higher . Not a bad days work when the old boiler is taken away for you .

    Next time

Buy him a large coffee...ick...:) Another nice job...per the norm. How do you like the peerless? Do they run quieter with the Riello? You should really take a vacation, you do to many boiler's..:) BTW if you had a company take one out, why not have them drop the new one in for you, we do that in alot of commercial unit's and it's nice not having to lug...just a thought.

    very slick....

like corn through a baby! nice drop header..Will the vent locals shorten their life ie. hammer? what do you guys use for back flow preventers? looks like a double check less the vent ie. watts 9D...do you guys insulate the pipes or do you leave it to the HO to do that? Whats with the Snapple? Seems like thats in a lot of pictures....carry on! kpc

  • Yeah , the vent being so close

to the bull headed tee will see more condensate slammed into it . I'm not sure the brand backflow we use but it is ventless so it won't dump any water on the floor doing it's job . The insulation we leave to the homeowner , but we do recommend it highly . The pipes were wrapped with asbestos , which was taken out with the old boiler . The Snapple is my liquid lunch , the last thing to go out to the truck with me . Thanks Kevin .

Kenny takes his coffee black , and to tell the truth , I'd rather drink that slop on the floor than have a black cup of joe .

I've had the pleasure to install Peerless almost all my career . I recommend them highly for steam as well as hot water . They aren't as quiet with a Riello F5 , compared with a Beckett or Carlin . But when we can use an F3 the sound is about the same as the others .

Actually , I wouldn't want it any other way , I'd rather install a boiler a day than do anything else in the heating trade . I might change my tune in the near future if my body can't take the abuse , but I got another few good years before that happens ( knock on wood ) .

Having the company that removed the old one drop the new one in there would be a logical step . But we very rarely have the old one ripped out by another company , and the new boiler with parts is at our shop waiting to be loaded on our trucks . Thank you 1chmb .

    Nice job, again

I wouldn't worry about those main vents too much, with the drop header you won't see any water being carried into the steam mains.

  • Years ago I used to

drop the equalizer size to the return size at the last elbow . But after seeing what happens in the clear pipe Weil Mclain , that straightened me out . Any way to get that carryover water back in the boiler instead of the system is the best route . Thank you Gerry . Any more big steamers coming your way soon ?

    Nice!

Another example of fine craftsmanship. It looks like you had a bit more room that your usual boiler-under-the-stairs jobs. The standards of the jobs showcased here are an inspiration and a challenge to others in the industry to always give it their best. Congratulations, Ron & co.
