Piping strategy question. WW

a job for a boiler replacement. It has 3 zones fed by very old zone valves. The customer wants a Buderus with Riello burner. (Gotta love customers that do their homework before calling) The challenge is this. He has copper fin baseboard and it makes a krinkling expansion sound when the heat enters the loop that he finds distracting. I would love to do a constant circ system but with 3 zones that would be a problem. I am thinking now of Primary secondary with outdoor reset on the boiler to keep the water not so hot. What strategys do you guys use? Thanks for any input. WW

Good concept
sometimes getting all the noise out is impossible. Many times the pipes were fastened too tightly or the holes in the floor to small to allow movement.
I wouldn't suggest to the customer that you will rid the system of all noise
Anything you do to limit wide temperature swings will help, of course. Hitting cols bb with 180 or hotter water will get things expanding and ticking!
Reset control make sense for this and possible fuel saving. You could do constant circ, but a bit more $$ with 3 zones.
The two stage t stat idea is a good idea also to extend the pump cycles.
Look over the current installation well before you commit to noise reduction

Take a look at the 2107 logomatic with a BFU (room sensor). One zone in the house is on constant circ using outdoor reset. The other two zones can be made to slave off the main zone - the logomatic manual gives the wiring instructions for this.

I like the idea
The customer has already expressed interest in the Logomatic. I personally thought it would be over kill since he does not want an indirect and has no low temp radiant zone so we would be only using 1 out of the 3 possible funtions for the high cost of that fine control. (See how cheap I am?) But it's his money and I should give him what he wants, if he's willing to pay for it. Who knows, if he has the other capabilities availible he may someday call me wanting an indirect or a radiant floor added. WW

Thanks Hot Rod.
I love reading Siggy articles. Another reflection of what a geek about hydronics I am. It reminds me of my college days. I went to Frostburg State in the Western MD mountains. We had cable TV that was fed from Washington, Baltimore and Pittsburg. As a result we got Star Trek 3 hrs in a row. It's amazing we passed any classes. Any ways, there is an episode where Captain Kirk has to dicipline Scotty for fighting in a space bar with the Kingons, so he confines him to quarters. Scotty's face lghts up and he exclaims, "That's great sir. Then I can catch up on me technical manuals reading!" Ah, good times. WW

Think of it this now, now you can sell him on the idea of a future indirect and or some radiant in a bath.
