condensing oil
My friend installs monitor boilers and I went to his house to look at it and ended up helping clean it as I was there. The inside had basicly no soot (heatwise burner) but did have a good amount of yellow residue. I believe that is the sulfur deposits left behind. I suggested he switch to kero or diesel and see how that went, but I don't think he has. Condensing equipment sounds great, but if the fuel isn't compatable and/or there is a lack of maintainence, it won't hold up. I saw a comfortmaker condensing gas unit where the powerventer and pvc exhaust had melted beyond recognition, turns out the air stream side coils had been so neglected that the heat wasn't being extracted and stack temp got to the point of meltdown. The biggest issue after that was that it was January and it was 3-4 days before the exact replacement for the powerventer could be obtained. What are you supposed to do if thats your only heat source?0 -
just cleaned
We have only one with a blue angle burner. I wish I had more info on them. The one we have runs great so far. It's three years old and cleaned twice. The condensate runs into a homemade filter before the cond. pump. I think the installer was trying to nutralize the water. The tube looks nasty and has turned black. The moisture on the baffles is rotting them away and they look like stainless steel. This unit has three 3 inch pvc lines to the out side. One exhaust and two intake. Any info would be great.0 -
We had this discussion over at OTT...
... the consensus was that until US fuel becomes cleaner, that there is no point in going through the additional expense, maintenance, etc. to deal with the gunk in condensing oil appliances.
I am still looking forward to the day when I can upgrade my Vitola to a VitolaPlus. Until then, I can dream of lower allowable PPM contamination in US fuel (or perhaps of making my own BioDiesel?)0 -
