Gravity Boiler

I was working on an OLD gravity boiler and on the incoming water line there is some type of, i don't actually know what to call it. It sits on the ground next to the boiler, is shaped like a wine bottle, piping comes in the side and out the top, it is stamped "Great Britain patent pending" and the lower inch or so is in the floor. About 18" above this is a discus shaped piece stamped Honeywell. Anyhow the bottle shaped piece has cracked and it leaked a puddle of mercury on the floor. Does anyone know what this is and what it does?

Sounds like a \"Heat Generator\"
Invented before circulators were, to move the water faster.
