Aird-Don Boiler

Saw a Aird-Don Company, Oil Boiler at a 9000 sq ft renovation in an old builing in Hudson, NY , had a large Swastika in the casting of the front section of the block. Has anyone seen or heard of this boiler, rating plate, jacket and controls were stripped... Has anyone heard of this,? Google couldn't help. Dan? Anybody?
Thanks,
Rick

Burnham might have made it for Aird-Don

they had a line of boilers called the "Swasteeka". The sizes are listed in the Hydronic Rating Handbook and possibly in Beacon too (in the Library) so if you measure yours we might be able to size it from that.

The Swastika was considered a good-luck symbol until Adolf Hitler started using it.

    Burnham Boiler with Swastika

Just ran into one yesterday. Owner said it was installed back in the 1930s. It says Burnham boiler and then below it says Levittown(?) NY (It was definitely NY, but not sure about Levittown. Can't tell from the picture). It's about 5' tall (ntoice all of the asbestos!!)and has been "abandoned" for a newer Weil McLein. I'd like to ask the owner if I could have the front plate, but the house was built in the 1600s and he is going to turn it into a historic landmark (if the county will help) so I would think he would want to leave it there just to add to the 'history" of the house....

    Burnham Boiler with Swastika

I received a reply from the good people at Burnham:

Thank you for the email this fine Friday morning. This question does
come up occasionally . You are correct in that we (BURNHAM ) were
originally based in Irvington New York. We did have a boiler series
known as the Swasteeka which at that time had a very positive
connotation . World events did change the perception of the Swastika
symbol hence this series was renamed.

  • Swastika Symbol on Boiler

Dave is correct as to our manufacturing facilities being situated in Irvington, NY. Back in those days prior to the two World Wars, the Swastika symbol was both a sign of prosperity and good luck. As a matter of fact, it dates back as far as 315 BC throughout Europe and Asia and was used by North American native Americans as well. It was used widely throughout the European countries on many products and is possibly the oldest known symbol in world history. If my memory serves me correctly, the original emblems had the configuration as a mirror image with the points in a counterclockwise direction. As Dave indicated, world events in the first half of the 20th century changed the connotation of the Swastika symbol somewhat. Hope this helps.
