I have a fuel oil tank in the basement that has been abandoned for quite some time.(apprx 70 gallons)Does #2 fuel oil go stale ?
Can it still burn efficiently after settling in a tank for 20 years without damaging a burner?

    stale

Dont know the answers to your question, but I went to a customers summer home last month. He filled the tank with K-1, 24 years ago. Still has 3/8 ths of a tank. I was sent for a tune-up. Unit had a 1725 burner on it. K-1 looked like 3 and 1, I don't recall the test results, but I thought they were within spec for the situation. As the boys around here say "Runnah".

    Sour diesel

I had a customer call me and tell me he had acess to large quantities of sour diesel. Couldn't find out from any boiler manufactures if that could be burned in a regulal oil boiler. They all asked for a fuel spec on the stuff. I'm not sure the customer understood exactly what he had been offered :)

Appparantly diesel can get a bacteria growing in it and make it unsuitable for engine fuel? Somehow it gets labeled sour and gets sold for whatever use this way.

I wonder if the same happens to fuel oil?

I've learned gasoline goes bad quickly these days. A year old tank of gas in a kick start motorcycle taught me this lesson!

    I had a bacteria problem...

in the in-ground steel tank at the house I bought. The stuff was grey and real snotty - clogged the filter, strainer, nozzle constantly. There are treatments (Kathon fuel biocide) for this, but I opted for a new tank anyway, due to the age and location of the "infected" one (also changed the oil lines and burner). Never saw this at any other job, though - lucky me?
