200 MPH on a US Public Road = Stupid
... I hope they throw the book at him. At that kind of a differential in speed, he would be in the backseat of most cars before he could even apply the brakes. The harm he could do under those circumstances is pretty scary.
For me, high speeds on public roads are reserved for the Autobahn, and then only under ideal conditions (very, very rare). Besides, you'd be surprised to see how much time you lose refilling the gas tank every ¾ hour just because you were going 150+MPH. Diminishing returns and all that.
In the US, I enjoyed taking my motorcycle to venues like NHIS, where there are few trees, no cars, and an ambulance standing by to scrape you off the tarmac if something goes wrong. The safety classes I was taking there were quite useful, and one of the few ways for amateurs to gain entry to NHIS (liability and all that).
Lastly, I appreciate the Japanese and German models where you can literally roll up to a track like the Nürburgring, pay a few bucks, and then let it all hang out. The Germans and Japanese are pragmatic like that, creating venues where folks can have their hoo-has without endangering the entire population.0 -
Nürburgring,
I wish there were more tracks like this one on our continent. I'm limited to a couple small road courses here in Alberta.
Going Fast is indeed an rush. Which is why it is dangerous for those under 30 to be riding these powerful machines. Only us old guys (over 40) have a slow hand and enough wisdom to know what is fun and what is down right dangerous.
Wonder how much his fine will be for going that fast...

Speed IS a rush,
But on a public road, that was way over the top. I've done about 2/3's of that a couple times, but in a strictly controlled environment.
20 years old and invincible.I remember the days but wouldn't dream of it on a public roadway. Some day, I hope that people in the states learn to drive like they do in (MOST OF) Europe.Stay to the right unless passing, check the rearview more often than every 20 minutes, makeup application and reading the newspaper are for sitting still, not in traffic, phone calls ARE a distraction not only to you but to your attention span and the folks around you and lastly....Buckle up! You may be the finest driver ever, but the nitwits next to you (applying makeup, reading the newspaper or jawing on the phone) aren't.Be careful out there! Chris0 -
checked the specs
I checked the specs on the latest & greatest litre bikes, and I have to call b/s on this one.
All litre bikes have speed limiters to 180Mph. and unless this kid had 2-stage nitro & maybe a super/turbo charger, there is no way he could hit the speed that was indicated.
Even the GP racers dont go that fast..
If the Kid does his homework and goes to court, he may convince the Judge to call b/s on the indicated speed, thus getting off scot free.. figures.

Number seems high to me also
Best I could get was around 127 from a box stock FJ1100 years back! With Max on board On public roads
We had good acess to the salt flats when I lived in Utah, but never had acess to anything that would go near 200mph.
Just the wind pull at 215 would be scary. Sure don't want to stand up, or even sit up right
Think maybe the watch keeper had too much of a shock factor going on to be that accurate.

maybe not
While I don't doubt that the speed limiter may have been there from the factory, not to say it was working on Saturday. Also, while I'm not a Honda expert, I bet that there is a chip that could be changed to boost power and a little taller gearing could get that bike up to 205 mph. Saw the interview last night on the news with the highway patrol pilot that clocked him and he apparently got at least 3 separate readings from the quarter mile marks on the road. In any event, thats a whole lot faster than I'd want to go! There may be jail time involved here along with a stiff fine.
Best part...the kid is the son of a county sheriff deputy.

It can happen
As Larry said, about 200.00 bucks worth of upgrades and change in gearing and a chain, I believe it IS possible. Personally have done a buck 45(clocked by NJ State troopers) and had room on the throttle to spare. Young and full of testoserone back then. I know honda makes a 900+ bike. Never seen a 1000. Maybe thats what they're calling the 1000.Either way, its fast to make hamburger out of the guy if he wrecked.0 -
You're right Tommy
A few bucks goes a long way on a bike that comes with 102bhp right out of the box, with standard pipes, 447lbs & rev-limited to 180mph.
The VTR1000 is Honda's V-twin answer to Ducati's V-twin 996 racing dominance.
It can (was intended to) be easily made to put out over 140hp, lose over 100lbs with very little work, and will go waaay over 205 mph.
Back to the original story line:
Extended periods at high speed really does get to feel normal, and everything just seems to flow with you, but usually a little behind you :O) When everything around you is going at your speed, everything sort of slows down.
In 1977, I was riding back to England from vacation in Greece on my brand new Honda Goldwing 1000. When I got off the ferry at the southern tip of Italy (Bari or Brindisi), I realized I was way behind schedule in getting to the Manx Grand Prix at the Isle of Man. Including 5 gas stops, fast sandwhiches, changing into my leathers and a quick pee or two, I made 851 miles to southern Switzerland in just over 7 hours. Never for one second did I feel like I was going fast. Italy DOES have incredibly smooth and well-kept 6 & 8 lane Autostrada's.
When I got to the I.O.M. a guy called Mick Grant, on a Kawasaki 900 was clocked at 192mph going round the "Veranda" at the mountain, and he was leaning over at the time!!! And he didn't win!! Mike Hailwood did, on a Ducati V-twin. Maybe it's a V-twin thing??
Must get to work. Google has lots on the "Honda VTR1000"
Have to batten-down, Ivan's coming back at us, it's starting to blow & rain outside.
Take care out there, Swampster.0 -

All right, I was the one who got the ticket and it is time to clear some things up. For one, I was riding a 2003 Honda RC51, "heavily modified" with 2 Brothers slip on pipes and, well thats all the mods I have unless you count the "I stop for wh***s" sticker. Next, the bike wasn't impounded, it was towed so it wouldn't be in the roadway. Ok, on to the tickets. 205...uh no. I am personal friends with the owner of "Hitman Motorsports" and tonight, Sept. 22, we did a top speed run on his dyno, in 6th gear, and maxed nearly 60mph slower than I was arrested for. The "no motorcycle endorsement" is because my licence was expired, I do have a motorcycle endoresement for all you people digging into me about that. The stop watch method may be accurate at times, but this is un-conceivable for my motorcycle to approach 205. Honda's RC211v, which is Honda's MotoGP race bike, 5 cyclinders and 268 horespower, just broke 200mph on the track within the last week. And we are talking about a 1/2 to 3/4 million dollar bike. And for you gear-heads, I had on Joe Rocket Boots, Shoei helmet, Leather gloves, Ballistic coat, and leather bottoms. Also, both of us were arrested, and no, the slower one did not get a warning, he was ticketed for 111mph on a F4i. I hope this clears things up for everybody, I am just sick of everyone saying things about what they dont know, making me look like this horrific person. People speed, and if anyone knows anything about the "Flood Run" (which was the ride I was on, which by the way benefits the Gillettes Children Fund) I would be a hell of a lot more concerned about the 7,000 bar-hopping motorcyclist out on the road. 99% of the people you hear things from are misinformed. If you have questions, I will answer them. And one last note, this is information you don't know, the pilot who clocked me, was clocking me and flying his plane at 110mph all at the same time. Think about that for a second.

I Didn't think the bike could go that fast..
