Vitodens Coding

We just started up a Vitodens 6-24 boiler and found that the internal circulator wouldn't work. Turns out that it's set that way at the factory and you have to go to coding address OB8 to change the value.

No big deal; just thought it odd that a default setting should be for non-operation.

  • Interesting. What's the proper setting when there is no DHW?

    coding

we have quite a few with the incorrect 0b8 coding address. viessmann now puts a warning sticker on the instruction packet that informs you to check the coding. and what is code 006 anyways?? marc.
  • Coding

I guess it just makes sence to do ALL the coding BEFORE we just power up the unit.

One thing that was covered in Viessmann's CBT factory training is that the 0B8 setting MUST be changed before startup. They drove that home really hard at the class. Also taught me a funny way to remember the installer menu access code; B-C-C-B = (Bill Clinton Chases Broads:)

  • Mike,

Not using DHW? Coding Address Value 000 should be changed from 000.001 (factory default) to> 000.000 for one heating circuit WITHOUT mixing valve. If you are using a mixing valve, (AKA circuit B), coding Address Value 000 should be changed from 000.001 (factory default) to> 000.002 Voila. No domestic.

    Pritty sure that's correct.

  • Code 006. It's a strange one.

I'm pritty sure it's a redundant code. It seems to indicate to me it's for the internal heating circuit pump speed (in the reduced range). This pump speed can be tweaked but, it must be done within address 044.

While we're on the subject, has anybody adjusted the rotational speeds of the heating circuit pump yet? Address 044, 045 and 046 are there for a reason. Right?

Cool control but, overwhealming at first. Also it looks like the engineers at KW have left lots of extra values unused. You think we will be upgrading the control in the future? Version 1.0 gets upgraded to 2.0 and so on?

    Not smarter...

... but they do love to make things more complicated than they ought to be. It appears to be designed to reward those that have been trained to do the right things with their equipment... and punish the rest.

I guess I'll have to think hard how to actually get any meaningful data out of my Vitola when the time comes... because it doesn't have a computer port like the Munchkin download data from, right?

  • Thanks Gary. Saw the required 000:000 coding change.

Is 0B8:000 correct as well? If so, it's not in my documentation.

Actually that default 0B8 setting of "Not Assigned" makes some sense, as it forces you to select the proper function for your particular DHW production scheme--such could never be properly assumed.

Will start my application with the default circulator settings--they appear perfect for maintenance flow in my system. BUT, the gravity piping [might] result in quite sluggish setback recovery of even a single TRV, so I [might] have to accept a bit of electrical waste for the sake of performance.
  • Apology

It was right there in my "Quick Start-Up Guide" and I didn't see it.

My friend, Brian at Radiant Engineering told me it was coded that way intentionally to lock out untrained installers. I'm humbled.

  • Having studied and written computer programming for all of my adult life, I know that the prime goal of a good programmer is to ensure adaptability and maintenance. You want to make your "fancy" coding as compact and generic as possible. The "guts" of the process don't really change--just the variables that affect it.

Likely those "don't change" settings are "general model" and "specific model" inputs set at the factory with utterly zero reason to EVER change unless some hardware in the system is changed/updated as well.

The "holes" in the addressing are likely there to be able to logically incorporate different models in the future while retaining everything else.
  • Mike, 0B8:000 is NOT incorrect !!!

Address OB8 is not delivered to us in North America as> "Not Assigned." 0B8 is shipped to us as; 0B8:006 (factory default). It's what we see and get for the very reason you mentioned above. 0B8:006 means you can't turn on a Vitodens without reading and following the MANY instruction manuals.> (it's turned off) Any potential system can never be properly assumed and that's the logical thinking behind this factory default. Smart not just German thinking. See page 55 of the Startup/service instructions for the WB2 series. I don't see 0B8:000 as an option. I MAY BE WRONG.

For the sake of performance; "circulator speed rotational settings" consult directly with big V. I've found that Mr. James Brown (the other one) is most supreme when it comes to the programing as well as various Vitodens applications.

So much more to learn. We should have another Wall just for dialing in the Comfortrol™;-)

Thanks for the programing insite. Hey, I'm just a plumber. Lots of holes in the programs and I had no idea why. Makes sense now.

  • ARGGH! Don't say, "just a plumber" or "just an anything" for that matter. Once you think of yourself as just something you stagnate and the world will pass you by...

Maybe someday I'll decide on a single hat to wear, but until then it will have to be a number of caps.
  • Just a minute

You're right, Mike. We should have more respect for ourselves.

  • Will find out for certain. None of the published options seem appropriate. Perhaps that change to 000:000 supercedes this address setting.
