Cast Iron Boiler \"clean out\" panels

I have a five section Bryant boiler-1950's. Each section has a "clean out" panel (per boiler manual) held in by boiler putty. Is it okay to remove these in order to flush boiler sediment out? Or should I not mess with these, since it has been many years since they were removed--maybe never. Thanks. Brian

    Time to replace

Touching any part of a 50 year old boiler might be looking for trouble. Trying to clean it might stress a gasket or section and start a leak. The boiler has server its time and you can research and find a good contractor and replacement system before heating season starts rather then doing an emergency replacement in the middle of winter.

Are the panels for accessing the flueways?

I'm familiar with rectangular cast iron panels that are located between each section, which need to be removed to brush the flue passages. They are typically held in place with a nut and bolt at the top, then cemented around the perimeter. Usually, they have been secured and sealed poorly - causing loss of draft and sooting in the jacket. Your post seems to refer to some panel that accesses the water passage, which is unfamiliar?
