flo checks

The taco flo-check instructions say that you are supposed to leave 12 inches between the pump and the flo-check I have never done this. I was just wondering what the reason is for it and what would happen if you didn't do it. I haven't had any problems but I don't want to have any either.

it should read 12 pipe diameters
so that the flow smoothes out and the check doesnt chatter its probably why taco puts the check on the IFC pump in the inlet even though its easier to service on the outlet like Grundfoss and also gives better NPSH on the outlet I had a Grundfos make a racket with just a drop of dirt in the built-in spring-check - this was on the boiler loop of a pri/sec/inject system, where the flow was really high as compared to a single pump system
this is all moot if your boiler room piping is tight and takes twists and turns then there is no way to smooth it out so dont bother0 -
Question
IS it ok or not to have the flo-chek before the circulator or not?0 -
outlet, to maximize NetPositiveSuctionHead
ie reduce suction restrictions as much as possible, while not a problem in most applications,if a boiler loop's temp is over 190 and the pressure at the check is low, it might just flash into steam at the check, or worse, in the pump0
