Are you converting the steam rads to hot water? If this is the case, at the very least, you should probably flush them all out( for the good it will do). Especially if your even THINKING about 1/2" pex. I'll take a wild guess here in thinking that those old steam rads are probably pretty loaded up w/ dirt. Has the potential to make a fine mess of your new install, big chunks of rust and all.0 -
a few nuts and bolts things:
certainly flush the sytem, and use a strainer. When you are making your connections to the old radiators, or to any reused steel piping use a steel fitting, or nipple before you go to brass, or copper. A little expando will save you hours. Price out getting the radiators stripped of the old paint, and re-price the job with new radiation. Give the owner the right to refuse this service, rather than having to hear "if I knew we could have had new/refurbished radiators, I would have gone through with it." Install shut off valves on supply lines that contain reused steel--especially if the pipe goes through walls.0 -
We did exactly that
on an old two-pipe steam system. Used a Munchkin and in one area, a Wirsbo manifold with telestats to zone by radiator and ran 1/2" PAP to the black iron joint just below the floor so that we could pipe up the radiators with new HW angle valves and return ells & have them retain the original look. No orifice should be needed.
You'll need a strainer ahead of the Munchkin's return to catch system junk.
