Question for the oil guys
Darin Cook_3

I just got done switching my Mom's house from the old oil tank to the new one. For the time being I dumped 10 gallons of diesel fuel into the tank. I would have preferred Kerosene but that tank would not operate. This is Upstate New York, the temps can dip as low as -20. Is straight Kerosene the answer or a mix of #2 and Kero(#1).
Thanks,
Darin

Darin, In my opinion unless the fuel oil is being treated regularly I would prefer Kero.
#2 Fuel Oil begins to Gell around + 20 degrees Kerosene Begins to Gell around + 5 degrees.
You want to keep Mom happy? Use Kero

Outside Tanks
We service mobile homes in ten different parks, they all have outside tanks. They all use kerosene with no problems. We have had a few houses that the owners refused to pay the extra cost of Kero. After the $500 service call to thaw the tank they switched. A few that use a blend often get caught when it gets cold.

id rather burn JP-4
drawn from an under ground tank pumped into a day tank, pulled thru a day tank run thru a tigerloop combo...unfortunately the cold causes minor technicalities.just before winter buy #2 couple months into winter buy #1..burns better dosent seperate out pearl kerosene is sorta waste of dollar.older burner (blast furnaces:)))liked thick fuels..i think in the early 70's they quit selling jp-4 to joe homeowner.0 -
Thanks for the help Guys
The only thing oil is Mom's hot water heater. The 275 gallon tank full will last her over a year. My Dad used to run regular #2. He has heat tape from the tank to where the oil line goes inside the house. I want to do away with that. Sounds like Kero is the way to go. Hey Weez- We do not use JP-4 on the Guard base anymore. We switched to JP-8 a long time ago. I believe that JP-8 is close to a #1 distillate. But I think I will leave it over at the guard base, Leavenworth has never really appealed to me. Thanks for the help everyone.

Used to live in Plattsburgh NY.
A mix of at least 60% kero and 40% #2 should be ok. Straight kero will eliminate more problems than just geling0 -
*~/:) see who says we cant learn something new:)
listen to this a second...the military uses a great deal of oil,and Alaska, struck up a deal to refine oil pump oil distribute oil and make the whole package tie together to allow oil development...one of the agreements was to make sure the price of home heating oil at that time would never be jacked up for the residents here ,so the oil companies could sell huge amounts of oil to the military, make some refined products to keep the smarter and more vociferous amongst us from revolting from the union for ripping natural resources out shipping them outta here and selling them back to us at whatever they thought was fairso it sorta sounded like a win win deal and all was well ...for like two years...the military used jp4 and we burned it in the furnaces and all was well ,then some lawyer type said oh heres how we do dis boise we crack out some #2 and call it home heating oil...less BTU's a gallon higher price and we didnt really change the agreement we providing home heating oil the government gets the jp-4 and all is well. then the deal went south from there...the military needed other Special fuels JP-5 and the last time i even cared what the oil companies and government were doing there was JP-7...NOW we have JP-8 Wow! .....i think JP_4 was a better deal though..it was like 185Kbtu's on a bad day.some #1 and 2 's are weak these days...yeah clean efficent safe...maybe...id rather be looking at a gallon of fuel that kept people warm allowed for them to buy groceries and maybe buy some gas so they could get out there and do some honest work. well Keep outta trouble and leave the jp-8 on base:)0 -
Whats JP-# ?
What does that grading mean?0 -
Darin,
You said your father used #2 all the time with heat tape.
Kero would be my choice also but you will need to be sure
the pump he was using for the #2 is suitable for Kero too.
#2 will provide the lubricant for the pump, Kero won't.

Heat Tape
Is the tape for gelling or for freeze ups ? Make sure the oil line does not have low dips along it's lenght where water would trap and freeze.....Half of the troubles...0 -
Dan
It is a Beckett burner with a Suntec pump. I think it can handle the Kero. I really would like to lose the heat tape. I have never felt comfortable with that on there. Is there a additive that can give lubrication to the pump if you do use Kero?

K-1 fuel pump
I believe suntec makes a kero only fuel unit.0 -

Why not
just dig out the basement like I suggested and be done with it?
Maybe if you stopped going to the Flight Line every night after work, you could dig out a new basement and put the oil tank inside?

I only go there for research material
It is for a book I am writing it is called, " Social Aberations of a semi-coherant intoxicated mechanical contractor with Terets carbon monoxy syndrome. Subtitled- Hey Look at the big brain on me "
The test subject really seems to be one real fart smeller, I mean smart feller.

Yes, you can get a Kero only pump. Thats the way to go rather than lube additives.0 -
Darin, check out Firedragon's book
"Combustion and Oil-Burning Equipment". He describes a way to provide extra suction for the cold oil from the tank using a standard fuel unit, and warm it up when it gets into the house, all with just a piece of 2-inch pipe and a few pipe fittings. Sort of a Tigerloop setup on steroids. I've never tried it myself but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
