Chimney Liner Question

My existing chimney is lined with a 5" diameter stainless steel (AL29-4C) flexible liner. The liner is approximately 25' in length . Does anyone know whether I can use this to safely vent a standard PIN type boiler like a Burnham V83 rated at ~125,000 BTU (gross), ~110,000 BTU (Net). Are there codes and/or specifications that govern what loads are appropriate for a given liner size? Any issues to watch out for?

Liner manufacturer charts can confirm your query. So indeed the 5" liner may accomidate your BTU demand. You need to include the lateral distance also in the equation.BUT the specifications from the boiler manufacturer may over rule this size and bump you to the take off size @ breech.

  • Tables I am looking at

for Gas liners (which have been derated 20% from B-vent tables) 5" will at 25 feet for a natural draft gas boiler handle with a 5' lateral single wall connector 132,000 BTU's.

    For a 10' lateral 126,000 BTU's

For a double wall connector 5' lateral 135,000

    And a double wall 10' lateral 129,000

I would imagine it will be close enough for oil.

I used tables from Tru-Flex Metal Hose Corporation.

    Saf-T-Vent Al294c 5" depending on lateral will handle at 25' 2' lateral 148,000

    5' 137,000

10' 120,000 with a possibility of condesation in the flue

    15' 108,000 also condensation possible

Those are all for a single appliance, if there are two or more the tables are different.

    Hope this helps.
