I do a lot of work with New York Cares as a team-leader volunteer. Also, all the money that we make in commissions from the Amazon.com links that you see in the Dan's Reading List section of HeatingHelp.com goes toward buying books for the mothers who live in the Red Cross Emergency Shelter on the west side of Manhattan.

These women and their kids are in the Emergency Shelter because of family violence. They're trying to improve their lives and the lives of their kids, and that's what the Book Club is about. It helps them to read better, and to discuss issues with other women who are in the same situation. It makes them feel less alone. It's a simple thing, but it can lead to a better life.

New York Cares has just posted their wish list for the coming months at Amazon.com. If you buy a book (it's a tax-deductable donation) you can help break the cycle of violence that often moves through the lives of these struggling women and children.

It's a small thing, but small things add up. And this is the way I've chosen to help my country after September 11. Perhaps you'll join me by buying a book.

Go to New York Cares Wish List. As you place your order you'll get to the part where they ask for shipping information. Chose the box that reads, "New York Cares Literacy Program." The book you buy will go directly to them.

Thanks so much for caring about people you've never even met. That makes you very special. Thanks.
Retired and loving it.

    If you'd rather

spend $10 on a brick (see the top of the Wall). I'll spend the money you donate on the books.

Thanks for helping me with this project.

    Three more on the way

Two things to note for folks ordering:

First, if you buy more than $25 you get free shipping so there's some incentive to put a couple more in the box ;')

Second, take a look at the priority on the wishlist, the books lower in the list are tagged as more important by whoever set up the list. Also, it looks like they've got nearly as many copies of the first one as they want.

    Gotta love books...

Dan, have you ever read any Patrick O'Brian? From some of the other books on your reading list I think that you might like his work.

    I have read him.

    He's hilarious.

Thanks so much for your help with this, and for the tips on buying.

I wish you could all visit the Red Cross Emergency Shelter and meet these people. While the moms are in the book club a lot of us volunteers read bedtime stories to their kids, who are absolutely precious.

Life happens. We do our best to help. It sort of spreads Sunday out over the rest of the week, if you know what I mean. Saturday too. :-)

    Thanks.
