Buderus install and the learning curve

for the start of this one . We were supposed to have 4 guys in the beginning , but just me and Sal were there , alone till about 1:30 pm . There is no way 2 men can lift that boiler up on the indirect , so needless to say , we didn't start piping till late . This was the end of day one . If you can believe it , installing the boiler jacket , burner door and asst. trim took us a good long time .

Our salesmen tell the homeowners where the system will be going , but they leave the exact positioning to us . We always consult the homeowner to see if the boiler is set where they want it . The lady of the house was home and told us this was fine .

We went back today to find the husband there , wondering why we positioned the boiler that way .

Noone mentioned he wanted to close the boiler in a room , and needed the space in front of the boiler for a wall in the garage . Our salesman didn't know , my manager didn't know . I don't think his wife knew . In my most humblest of voices , I told him I am really not psychic so I did not know about the phantom wall . Well , guess what ? He insisted , and we moved it . I hate , hate , hate , doing things twice .

and the boiler repositioned . I really like the adjustable legs on the indirect . Levelling the piggy back and moving all that weight was a breeze . We never made a wall mounted system before , and didn't have anything good to fasten the piping to . Sal came up with using a few Taco flanges and nipples , screwed into the wall with lag bolts . It might not look pretty , but it is damn sturdy . We'll support the return piping the same way tomorrow .

Theres a bunch of firsts for us , or almost firsts , on this job . We hardly ever use Buderus , we just started to use pex for heating and domestic piping , and the Taco IFC circs are a 1st . My supervisor doesn't know I picked them up , so Bruce if you see this , it was Sal's idea .

When he told you he was gonna enclose the boiler in a room, I'm sure you advised him about the combustion air that would be needed.

    It's like a song

It's like a song that i sing when i'm doing a boiler job the one thing i know is i'm taking to long .Don't feel bad it's not a learning curve it's just the job it happens i always feel that i'm not getting enough done then i realize i'm doing it just about alone but i still feel like i'm moving to slow aside from that you must feel like your in the country with all that space. That 215 4 section kindas a wee bit heavy more so when putting it on a tank yet to try it on a 215 i think it's fear of furture tank replacement but i think the hortizontal tank has a better recovery rating then it 's vertical counter part .good luck ron i think you got the restt of it licked .Have you come up with a plan for that storage tank ? Have you toyed with the idea of using it as a high temp storage tank and then you can use it for all heat demands ex dhw radiant heat it's a though instead of just domestic hot water you could make a little dent in oil comsumption in the milder parts of the year .good luck peace clammy

    Ron, Looking good so far.

I love the "mind reading" part of this job! What do you mean no one told you? Don't you know that you're SUPPOSED to ?

Milne sometimes accuses me of asking too many questions, but my feeling is the same as yours. I only want to move these things 1 time.(no slam, Scott....) Sometimes the people looking at the jobs don't see all the "incidental accoutriments" that will have to be employed to meet CODES,work better or even to make the job look nicer.

For your first BLUE install, your moving at the right pace. If you have questions noone can answer, don't forget the hotline number. (1-800-BUDERUS). They either have the answers , or can find out fast for you. Don't be affraid to use it, I do all the time. Looking good. Chris

    Hey

That's not a closet..How in the world could you work with that much space??? J/K, love the job so far, per the norm looking good! You will love the ifc setup, save's alot of time and material. Just make sure to stock one and tag them so if a tech has to replace one in the middle of the night, after the sticker's fall off, he know's what's there!
P.S. If you would just learn to read mind's that wouldn't have happened!! :)

    Question

I see you are using the Taco Lwco. Have you guys ever had that Lwco lock the system out because of the water purity setting ( it is a little dial) inside of it? We did and that was the last one we used. Those are the kind of no heats calls that make you want to go out to the truck and get the 3lb lump hammer and knock it off the boiler.

Buderus makes a great boiler. They are the world's largest manufacturer of cast iron boilers. The G115 is a great oil boiler with the Riello gun on it. No significant price difference between the W M WGO and G115. Did you get a kick out of the boiler install instructions on setting all your pipes in a row and ROLL the boiler into sie bolter room. Ja maybe in Deutchland. Can you guys get your hands on some unistrut? It will make it easier on you when trying to mount your manifolds on a wall. Make sure you post a picture when you are all done. I have no doubt it will come out as nice as your other installs. I have three Buderus 234's over on my guard base I am installing in a modular set-up. I will post some pics.

    Ron Jr. & Sal,

Job looks like its progressing nicely. Remember the phone number 1-800-Buderus (1-800-283-3787).

We will consider adding "Check with man and women of household for boiler placement before begining install" in our manuals.
  • The homeowner

did apologize over the phone today and really likes how it's coming out . He said the pipework looks like a church organ .

I wanted to get it up and running today , but the instructions for the Logomatic were not sent . At first I thought those German engineers made the control intuitive - so no instructions are needed . But after looking over the control itself , I know I would fry it in a heartbeat without em . There was too much detail to go into over the phone with Buderus , so I stopped by the supply house and they copied them for me . Thanks alot Chris .
  • We got a situation with the solar tank

The lady homeowner informed me that my company is supposed to hook in new lines from the collectors to the tank . Sort of a change in story when she said on the 1st day someone else was taking care of it . It's not in our contract either , and the salesman told me today we are not involved with it .

I took a closer look at the tank and it doesn't look worth messing with . I'm going to try to convince her to be rid of it - more than likely she needs new collectors , as well as the lines , and a new tank soon . Thanks Clammy .

or first negotiate placement then price:)

  • Really not much space

The homeowner did clear the corner for us , but they piled a load of stuff to the right . We're still tripping over each other , like normal .

My supervisor still doesn't know I bought the IFCs . If they work good here , you bet I'll insist on them for every job . Thanks 1chmb .
  • I haven't personally

had the Taco LWCO lockout because of the sensitivity on an install , but a few servicemen told me they've been going back to jobs for that reason . It is not going to be a pretty picture if a bunch of them lockout in a real cold spell .

This is only our 4th or 5th Buderus install . The last one was maybe 6 years ago . From what I heard , the price difference between the Buderus and American made is insignificant , not so 5 years ago . I didn't read the part about rolling the boiler in , but that aint a bad idea . We roll old steamers out of the way sometimes - chamber included . We did the catwalk shuffle with this boiler , worked pretty good .

I wanted to paint a sheet of plywood blue and mount it behind the pipework , but we're so far behind already . For the next one I will definitely find some unistrut and mount it on plywood . It wouldn't add much time to the job . Thanks Darin , and I'm looking foward to your pics .
  • That's a good reminder

But how are you gonna get dummies like me to read the manual first ? We'll be starting it up tomorrow , and if we have any questions , I'll use the number .

A question , how do I get a copy of the Logomatic control instruction manual ? It's the model with 09 on the end . I personally opened the box first , and the manual was not there . Thanks for any help Joe .

    Ron,

I'll try to post the link for you.

Give it a try, but either print it if possible, or have a magnifying glass handy. (These damn letters are getting too small!) Chris
