    Hi John,
Do you think you have that must of a moisture problem in your basement? If so more than just your tank will be at risk and you should address the basement problem itself rather than try to protect everything else from it.

    I think ,

Hercules still makes tank paint. It is asphalt based and messy as all get out. We used to cut it with a bit of kerosene to make it thinner and easier to apply.

The outside of an oil tank should look nice, but it is whats inside that counts. Most oil tanks decay from the inside out due to water and biological growth. Buy from reputable dealers and you will USUALLY get treated fuel to control both. Chris

    Painting oil tanks

People are stuck on black but in a basement any color will work. Just use a paint rated for metal. As someone else pointed out, rust damage comes from the inside. The oil company I work for offers an annual treatment to prevent corrosion. It is put in for a fee and if the tank leaks there is a replacement program.

I've heard of that offer and from what I understand it is a pretty reasonable costing yearly PM with a good warrantee.
Remember stuff like Z-bar or whatever the 5 year rust proofing spray was that they use to put on new cars for a fee. Nobody cared if it really worked or not because there
was a solid warrantee that came with it. Same idea, if it works great, if not the problem is covered.

    Paint it to match

the basement walls in a good alkyd-resin paint and forget it! Who wants that black coffin in a corner? Paint it grey or light blue in an empty basement including the pipes and it disappears, FACT! Out of sight, out of mind, no problem!
