Munchkin Pressure Problem
LJ
Member Posts: 8
I have a Munchkin M80, installed about 6 months. The property has its own well and pressure system. The Munchkin has been working with out any problems. Last week the Munchkin went into a PRO fault. I check the domestic water pressure, it was at 40 psi and then checked the pressure after the regulator of the Munchkins water supply, it was a little high 25 psi. the unit still had PRO fault. I then adjusted the pressure switch counterclockwise until the unit reset and started up. The pressure on this unit has been the same for the whole 6 months of operation. I would like to know what may have caused this to happen all of a sudden. Please enlighten me. Thanks ahead of time for your time.

Pressure
What may have happened was a drop in system pressure that initially tripped the switch. Is there a backflow preventer on the domestic system? Without one,a drop in the domestic system pressure due to a power outage or for repair may have inadvertantly drawn the boiler pressure down with it. A small amount of debris may have landed in the switch itself from the initial filling, which would only add to the problem. By adjusting the switch, you moved the diaphram and/or dislodged the offending debris. Occasionally I have seen the switches stick open if they have been sitting for some time since testing. A sharp rap with a screwdriver handle is usually all it takes to remedy this.0 -
Thanks guy for your reply.
Yes I have a Watts BFP dont remember the model # it was pricy. Then a regulator and then two swing type back flow valve. Think you are right about the dirt. I'm going to put a filter right before the unit and flush it out. By the way the owner only come a few time a year, so the unit does sit for months with no use. Is there something I can do so that this does not become my personal job to go and turn the heater on every time someone comes. Dont thing they will pay me for that. thanks0 -
under pressure
Usually what you experienced is a one time deal. The chance of it happening even once is slim, so as un assuring as this might sound, it's doubtful that it will re-occur.

Take a look at the Caleffi Autofill valve. It allows you to fill a boiler at a set pressure and will maintain that pressure setting regardless of input. It also has a build in shut off and removable cartridge so that you can isolate down stream flow. For about the same money as an conventional boiler fill, you can eliminate this type of problem.
This is certainly the preferred method of boiler fill in Europe and may be worth a look for you. Just go to www.caleffi.us and look at hydronic products section. You will see the information on the Autofill.
Hope this helps.

funny, it just happened to me
Brand new Munchkin installed last week. Sitting unused because of course it is not cold yet. Showing PRO when I looked at it today. Pressure gauge shows 18psi.
I ran the thermostat up, Munchkin/circulator started up, error message cleared. Stopped it, eror message returned.
Did a search, found this thread. Tapped the switch with a screwdriver handle and it came to life on the third try.
I can't afford to have it happen again, I am not always home and I'm the only one who will do things to boilers with screwdriver handles. It's a new Munchkin! What if it happens when everyone is out of town?0
