What are your recomendations for covering compressors for the winter season. And any recomendations as to what covers to use. I know they need to breath and the cover should not be nylon or go down. Or am I just wasting my $$

    In my opinion...

....yes,but only the top (top discharge) if there is alot of foliage near, arould or above the unit. The leaves, pine needles,or acorns etc., deposited in the fall will lay inside the bottom of the unit and decompose eventually rotting out the bottom of the condenser (if the base is metal). For you salt water environment folks I liberally spray the condenser coil sheet ends, electrical components and O.D.F.M. with marine (green spray can) CRC.The biggest fault I have found with covering the condenser is the H.O.forgetting to remove it in the spring and starting the unit up...

    Covers....

just a note , that covering the hole units is ok, covering just the top is better, if the hole unit is covered it makes a great home for small critters, they like to eat wires, i would also shut down the breaker at the panel so as no problems occur ir a rodent dose get in, i have seen some good flame marks on the inside where a mouse had past on to the big mouse hole in the sky.....

    Cover

I agree with the previous posts. Cover only top to prevent leaves, etc. from entering. Leave sides uncovered to help with air circulation to keep moisture levels down. Leaves or pine straw will stay wet all winter and rust the bottom.
