some fun pics on indirects that we put in. The s-120 tanks are great but I havent cleaned one yet. The top has an allen wrench setup. Can anyone tell me what size it is? The older style tanks are realy easy to clean and I hope this tank is too.

The plug requires a six sided 24mm allen wrench. The anode rod requires a 27mm six sided socket.
    Thanks for posting the pictures!!!

    yep

that is a taco 5000 we install on every tank job. The indirects sometimes get too hot we like that but do not want to crisp any nice folk. Thanks for the sizes I have to go shopping now. Need some tools. I like the support the buderus tank gives the supply. Not alot of hanging needed and it can all be prepiped. Thanks

    thermal trap

Generally this will extend the life of a tempering valve by years. You can get thewm pre-made from people like Souix Chief or make your own. Just a thought.

Do you install alot of Buderus indirects ? The standalone variety , like in the pics ? How are they holding up ? And what kind of warantee comes with them ? We"ve had a much larger than normal failure rate with the Crown Megastor , Burnham Alliance , and the old Phase 3 HL series . My neighbor is going on his 4th Phase 3 in 5 years . This phenomenon is happening with our accounts all over Long Island . Normal water pressure , but we don't test the city supplied water . We haven't used the new Smart Phase 3 enough , and just recently started installing the Alliance G . Just wondering if the Buderus indirect might last longer .

  • That might be the problem

Sometimes you swear you can taste chlorine or florine ( not sure which is added ) in the tap water . There are different water districts throughout Long Island , but all of our water comes from the ground , not lakes . I wonder if that makes a difference when purifying ?

We tried the Vaughn once . Wayyyy too heavy and installing the coil was a pain in the rump . You ever try one ?

    yes, many

you are right. heavy. Quick recovery. You think they are heavy going in ...you ought to move one comming out! Cement soaks up a lot of water!
Since HTP came out with the contender I have mostly used the SSU50 and a handful of 80's...They don't have the recovery speed but for the price they are hard to beat. I am waiting for State to come out with a new Indirect. The last one the discontinued was PEX lined...kpc

    To Heavy??

Ron, It's lighter than the boiler you haul in. These are great tanks, I have done countless #'s of them with only one coil gasket problem.
  • OK , I shoulda said

too heavy , compared to a Megastor . The problem becomes hauling it up 5 steps through a house , then down a flight of stairs into the basement by yourself . A normal one man job requires an extra guy for the 1st part . Well , I can't complain about the weight of the Vaughn , these new Alliance G tanks are probably just as heavy . Hey EJW , any leakers , other than the coil gasket problem ?

    Knock on wood

No problems yet. I do have them delivered and the supply house driver helps me into the basement. I wouldn't try any of them solo no matter how light they are.

Buderus warranty is full replacement for the first eight years, then pro-rated down to 25% at the 15 year and beyond. There sounds like some water quality issues. I would suggest to have water tested and if that is the problem look at correcting.

    Last I looked......

I had 200 pics of jobs and still growing. most have indirects and are buderus (keep forgeting the camera). The tanks have a coating on the inside to protect them from domestic water. I have cleaned some out and found it very easy. You can open the plug on top ,run the coil hot and wash any build up off with cold water. It will shock the crap right off the coil....it comes out like new. I had one ten years old, a simple wash and an anode rod and They are good for another ten years. Why carry the tank when I can roll it into the basement but I have picked up the s-120 myself. I have had the coin vents on the phase three leak through and would have to change the tank. They trap the air at the vent and it just eats it away. The alliance, amtrol is a plastic tank with a steel coil plate in the bottom. I have had some problems with. 1. The conections under the tank have failed.2. the coil gets coated and has to be removed to be cleaned the right way. I have not installed many others and this is just my opinion on tanks. Talk to a rep and find the website for more info and you will like what you see.

    Chlorides

Hi Ron, I think what they mean by high chlorides has to do with salt in the water. I was talking to a couple reps recently and they both had the same experiences. The glass lined alliance is supposed to hold up better to this than the stainless steel. I was told that the welds give out on stainless and there is a heavy duty version of the Weil/triangle tank available to prevent this. I would guess that the groundwater on the island would have high levels of salt in it. I wonder if there is a simple test for this or if it has to be sent to a lab?
