Supplemental Heat Ideas

We are in the middle of a big plumbing/radiant heat job on a custom log cabin. Due to the cabin design we are going to have to install quite a bit of supplementary heat. Originally we were going to install a hydro-air system, but the homeowner has decided that he doesn't want ducts running through the cabin that would alter the rustic look of the cabin. We are looking to add baseboard heat or radiators, but they need to have the rustic/old fashioned look to them. Does anybody have any suggestions as far as manufacturers or options that we could use for this project? Also, do you think that humidity levels will be an issue in this cabin with all the exposed logs and quite a bit of hardwood flooring?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    CI Baseboard

from Burnham and Slant/Fin are nice but don't have an old look to them. Checkout Burnham's CI rads. Maybe the clean look of some steel column rads painted black like Myson's:

    localized convectors

Since you're already talking about supplimentary heat, how about some small fan convectors. Sometimes the log cabin great rooms give you no place to put these.

    Supplemental to what?

    Wood stove?

  • What about wood grain baseboard ?

I'm not sure if any manufacturer makes it anymore . We still have a few feet of Argo woodgrain for customers who need some replaced . It might still be in production .

Is there sheet rock or wood paneling? You could do wall or ceiling radiant loops too.

    no sheetrock

just T&G cielings and interior walls. no place to install radiant walls because of the exsposed log structure, and the ceilings are at least 10' and higher. found a web site called www.antiqueplumbingandradiators.com and looked at some of there products they said they had a variaty of rustic looking styles but i'am a little worried about using used radiators, does anyone have any thoughts on that. also looked at www.reggioregister.com and looked at their recessed radiators which are a piece of copper fin tube installed in a metal can that is recessed in the floor with grill (if you did'nt know) has anyone used these before and do you think these are a good idea?

Its all aesthetics, what looks good to one looks bad to another. Give the owner some options.

We use alot of Buderus panels for our supplemental. Bright white might not look good in a log cabin but I like the idea of painting it. Maybe a brown that would blend in ?

Try showing the customer the panel and some cast iron baseboard that could be painting to blend in. I would think small modern cast iron radiators would be fine, but who knows. Let the owner decide.

Sounds like a fun project. Good Luck.

Kickspace heaters work well. Most manufacturers offer wall kits, these units can add up to 11500 btu's.
