Question for Glenn Stanton

Glenn,

I am adding some radiant heat, to a house that has two Burnham P204PV-WNI Boilers, I have the serial numbers if you need them. They both have plexico vent. Should these be changed, is there a fitting to put on top of the boiler where the plexico addapter is bolted?

Thanks,

Chuck Shaw

If you raise him, I have a venting question for Glenn too

    Glenn,

I'm considering having an oil-fired Burnham V83 installed. My current chimney is lined with a 5 inch liner (AL29-4C SS) that is 30 ft in hieght. The lateral distance to the flue connection would be 3-4 ft. My heating load would require the V83 to be fired at 1 GPH equivalent rate. Is it ok to reduce the 6 inch breeching down to 5 inches at the connection to the flue for the V83? Burnham's literature states 6in round at 15ft, but 6in seems to be overkill at 30ft.

A second question ... is there any benefit to running the V83 as warm start (by using an L8124 instead of the L8148) when using an indirect? By this I mean, wouldn't it provide faster indirect recovery as well as keeping the boiler cleaner by not having to cold start where condensation may cause issues ... obviously at some cost due to standby losses.

    CAP program

    Chuck,

I don't know about an adapter for burnham's boiler, but there should be an allowance for changing the plexco under the CAP program.

I don't have the 800 number here at home, maybe someone else has it and can post it.

I am running a V73 in my home. I have 2 zones for heat and one for an indirect water heater. I am set up with the L8148
for cold start and have never had a problem with it keeping up. One time in 5 years I could feel a temp drop when I was in the shower. (nothing too dramatic) It was winter and both
heat zones were calling and the dishwasher was also running.
I never put it on a priority zone because that was the only time I saw anything. I like the cold start because I have seen the system come down to almost room temp in the summer.
I never had a problem with condensate and don't think you will either but Glenn can confirm that for you. I think you'll like the V83 if you go with it. Good Luck......Dan

Some help from a different Glenn

That plastic garbage has been recalled and class action lawsuited right out of the market. The joints will eventually pull apart, and or the pipe will crack. IMO, get it out of there ASAP.

The number for the C.A.P. recall program is 1-800-758-3688

By the way, thereis an adapter for the SS pipe, as I have a couple of P200 series boilers that were converted from plastic to SS. Unfortunatly, I don't know the part #, So Mr. Stanton will have to help you with that.

By the way, Glenn Stanton's e-mail is gstanton@burnham.com

The Plex Vent should still be covered under the program as indicated in the other posts. More than likely, however, you will need to aquire the Stainless components to adapt to the induced draft fan and the termination for outdoors. These are all included, along with gaskets, in the Vent Accessory Carton that is available through your Burnham Distributor. The part numbers are as follows:

    203PV-204PV Vent Accessory Carton - # 611170323
    205PV-206PV vent Accessory Carton - # 611170523

Sorry for the delay in responding to this as my wife and I went furniture shopping all day yesterday until 11:00 pm last night. Sure glad we don't do that too often!

I would advise checking with the liner manufacturer to see what that liner can handle. I have seen this done provided the liner can handle it and provided it is only one size smaller in diameter. The reduction needs to be made at the liner connection and not at the boiler.

As far as cold start goes, we suggest cold start applications with indirects. Having graphed performance, response time and recovery on various jobs with cold start and temperature maintainence, I have always found cold start to perform better. There is a big contraversy regarding this from various folks in the field who say that the warmer environment within the boiler created by temperature maintainence makes cleaning the boiler a much easier task. This may be true but at what cost in overall fuel usage and efficiency? The other argument has been that a cold start boiler will cool down the indirect at the beginning of the cycle. This is totally false unless the draft conditions through the boiler on the off cycle are such that the boiler has cooled down significantly. In the majority of cases, the coolest boiler temperature during the off cycle will still be above the low end tank temperature. Hope this helps.
