Mini therm boilers

I was using the 45,000 btu Lochinvar copper boiler for basement infloor jobs. They were light weight and very reasonable to buy.My supplier just told me that they discontinued them for another model costing $250.00 more. Do any of you guys know of another boiler small enough and reasonably priced for just doing basement floors. I use the Munchkin in whole house apps, but that is quite pricey for just the basement. Thanks for any help.

    Mini Therm

Go to our website at www.laars.com and look for the technical documents and submittal data drop down menu. The Mini Therm 50 is still there, 50 mbh input, 42mbh output.

Is Laars the same company as Lochinvar? That boiler is not the same as the Lochinvar 45 I was using.

    Plenty of small gas boilers

Not copper fin tube, though. Most are cast iron, but the small ones are only 200 lbs. No, Laars is a seperate company. Crown's Aruba series has a small boiler that has 37K input and only 30K output.

    Laars is not the same

company as Lochinvar, we make small copper fin tube boilers, and one of our models is called the Mini Therm.

If you would like some more information on our boilers call me on monday at 603-335-6300x562 8 to 5 Eastern.

    Lochinvar

Yes, Lochinvar is having a price increase. They have totally redone the Mini-fin line. It is now called the "Solution" boiler. The price increase reflects now standard 2-stage firing, integral non-combustible floor shield, and terminals for outdoor-reset sensors.

You may want to consider all of that a pretty good bang for your buck.

I am looking forward to seeing this at ISH-NA.

I do consider the upgrades on the Lochinvar good. But, I am bidding against guys using water heaters and most of my jobs were bid out before I got the info on the price increase. It would look kind of fishy if I was to throw another $250.00 on top of it. I talked most of them into the Mini and they were alright with the lower price because it wasn't much more than the water heater system. I'm just testing the waters to see if there is any other boiler in the same price range and that uses a 3" vent.

Would any of you consider using one of the tankless water heaters for heating a basement floor. Perhaps the Bosch 38B or equivalent. It has the btu rating I'm looking for and it doesn't take up alot of space. It is also designed to take cold water back to it. This would eliminate the P/S needed on the small non-condensing boilers I have been using.

    I wouldn't...

but thats just me. I believe that tankless DHW heaters shouldn't be MIS-applied to space heating applications.

First and foremost, the parasitic cost of operation (MONGO head pump)detracts from any thermal efficiencies stated.

Secondly, most are designed for a large delta T (40 to 120) and when applied to the typical space heat app. they CAN short cycle. Short cycle inefficiency will KILL you, in more ways than one.

As an tankless instantaneous DHW heater, they work GREAT.

In space heating apps., thier losses outweigh their wins.

Inasmuch as I wouldn't attempt to use a cast iron space heating boiler as a tankless unit, I don't like applying DHW heaters as space heaters.

    But thats just me...
