Daniel will be leaving for college today to start his freshman year for electrical engineering at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. The wife and I will be driving him down to San Luis Obispo this afternoon.
It will be tough to see him go and we'll come back to an empty house since my daughter and her girlfriend found an apartment. We've raised both our children in this house and it will be very quiet now that both of them are gone.
I suppose everyone with children goes through these difficult emotions; sure is hard. I'm happy for the children, but sad for me and my wife.
Thanks for listening.

It is a life turning event
When my son and daughters left, the old days never returned.
Their lives changed permanently, so did my wife and mine.
There are both good and bad changes, but it never returns like it was.
It is another life event, like the birth of a child. That life ends and a new one begins. The surprise will take some getting use too.
By the way that is an excellent school your son is going to attend.0 -
The longest walk
for us was the one in our oldest son's dormatory the day we dropped him off at college. Then we went home and moved! We did - but we told him where we went. He's been out of school, and married for several years & has been a delight to watch grow into full adulthood (whatever that is cause I'm not there yet!).
We'll be taking the last long walk next year when our youngest goes off to college. I've been giving a lot of thoughts to the sentiments you've expressed & I know how difficult this step is for you both. Good luck!

Empty Nester syndrome...
Just me, my wife and three dogs. All the kids done growed up and left.
It makes you appreciate Thanksgiving and other gathering holidays, that's for sure.
Maybe when he graduates, you'll be able to afford to install a RFH system in your own home eh...:-)
That was the biggest raise I ever gave myself, for sure!
Hang in there Alan, you'll get used to it. You no sooner get used to it, and the kids will start moving back in,

My best friend just did the same thing and said it was pretty tough. Think more of the joy you have, in that he is through with high school and is now a fine young man. Your wife and you have done a wonderfull job.
On the other hand yours and Dave's stories have made me think that in ten years I'll be doing the same thing.
Its going to be a big house after that.
Have a great day tommorrow.

My daughter
Stacey went off to college two weeks ago. It's so hard watching your little girl, she's 18 now, move out of the home she's lived in all of her life. She's adjusting well though and I'm so happy for her. She has a real sense of balance about her that you don't often find among young people, or people of any age for that matter.
Our middle daughter, Ally, is 16 now and will be moving on in two years also. And for those of you who remember Stevie (Stephanie), she's in high school now. Unbelievable!
Time will fly by if we let it. I know I need to remind myself constantly that there is more to life than work, worry, and ESPN. Today is the only day that matters.
Never let your kids forget how much you love them.
Nice talk'n to you guys again.

Here also.......
Time is flying in our house too. Our last one left for college this fall. It's only about a 2 hour drive so he comes back on weekends when his schedule is open. We have already noticed a huge drop in the grocery bill and 1/2 the laundry and dirty dishes. It seems wierd not leaving the porch light on for him when we hit the sack. Too quiet. No-one coming in and flipping on every light in the house at midnight or later, rambling around in the fridge, rattling dishes as he grabbed a midnight snack........
We are lucky though. Both the daughters (Sue and Mike, Sal and Eric) and the other son (Andy)live within 5 miles of us so we see them and the grandkids nearly every day. Andy works with me everyday and sticks around like a bad habit. We just saw the first pics of grandkid #4. Been in the "oven" for 2 1/2 months now. Looking to see that one in April next year. Since this picture, Mike and Sue have added a little hummer named Maggie to the mix. She just had her first birthday and is into everything she can get her hands on.
Sorry about the size of the pic..0 -

My son
My best pal, also left for college about 14 years ago. It was not doubt, the worst day of my life. When we got home I went into his room, closed the door, sat down on his bed and cried (in a "MANLY" way). For the first month I went into his room every time I passed it, I missed him like an amputated limb. But I started thinking about the reality of life. This was one of lifes major cyclical events. The start of his matuarion and real life education. After the first month passed and we realised that our lives had not ended, and having the knowledge that we gave him the proper tools for survival,we started to enjoy our new found freedom. The house went from miserable emptyness to a home waiting for him to come back for holidays and family events. He is now out on his own, succesful in his chosen career and we see him as often as we (and he) want. We now have a 1- month old bruiser grandson that now weighs 12 pounds and is 23 inches long or tall (whatever). Life is good my friends when you put all of it into the proper perspective and line up your priorities. Hang in ther Alan, it only gets better.

never really gone
all but one has moved back in at one time or another except the youngest, she's starting her 6th year in college.
We've been blessed with our now 11year old granddaughter since she was 1. Sometimes she spends a weekend at her moms or aunts house and we look at each other and say "so this is what it would be like".
Hearts are so big for kids that they are never really gone.0 -
What a wonderfull family Steve !
You should be quite proud.
You guys are killing me, I have two small boys that are the light of my eyes and the thought of them not being around is heart breaking. Think I'll quit and just spend every hour with them
Guess I 'll just stay happy with what I got

Thanks Scotty
It is always good to pause from our daily routines to consider what is really important, what really matters, what really makes a difference in the lives of those we meet, what really makes a difference in the lives of our kids.
I heard or read somewhere along the line that kids spell the word love, T I M E. I think that pretty much sums it up. Have a good week bud! Hug them chillin's!0 -
Great Family pics Steve.
Seems like we should have a thread just for great family pics.
Regards,

You guys
are killing me.
I though I got all my crying done over the weekend and here I am on Monday, sitting at my desk, bawling away as I'm reading your threads.
My wife and I actually had a wonderful time at Daniel's new school. He's got a great roommate, nice room and an excellent school.
