Should you bleed radiators when doing PM

The subject of bleeding radiators came up in one of our meetings. There was spirited debate between technicians both for and against bleeding radiators when performing our service contracts. One side argued that if the radiators are bled that it could lead to future problems, especially if the expansion tank is undersized. They want to just check the radiators to see if they're heating or not. The other side argues that they should be bled because if you don't you may not find the undersized expansion tank, and if the radiator is half full then the radiator becomes undersized since the entire sq. ft. of radiation is not being utilized. Most of the systems we are servicing are old gravity systems converted with a pump on the return. What do you think?

    Right church...

    Wrong pew.

The question is not whether or not your should be bleeding - but rather why is it necessary to bleed ever?

A properly designed system NEVER requires bleeding!

I never encountered a system with the circulator "pumping away" that ever needed bleeding - once it's installed properly and bled one last time! Never!

The problem is not whether to bleed. The problem is to fix the cause of air contamination in the first place so bleeding and all the bad things related thereto (diminshed flow, reduced output, system corrosion from air contamination, noise, damaged automatic air vents, expansion tank flooding, system leaks, etc.) are eliminated.

Bleeding is like putting fertilizer on a weed.
