Does anyone out there know anything about the newer A/C systems wherein the unit is installed in the attic and some type of tubing is run throuought the attic and down thru the cielings in each room? My parents are looking to possibly buy a house that has electric radiant heat, but no A/C.....any other ideas for adding some kind of central A/C without tearing up the house too much?

Thanks in advance!

    Unico System

Check out www.unicosystem.com. There is mucho information to be digested, if you are so inclined. Also try spacepak.com, which is a competing system (and I think the originator).

Not cheap, but it has worked well for us in the two years since we retrofitted it into our 1926 tudor revival home in Michigan. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

    Air Conditioning - attic

We installed AC in our attics and used flex duct to drop to each room, with diffusers. Close them in the winter to keep cold air from falling into the rooms. We used two 2-1/2 ton units, one for upstairs bedrooms, and one for downstairs living areas. Works great. Seldom use the upstairs units. With BB it makes an extremely comfortable home in the St. Louis area. Air handlers, with A-coils are Bryant, and condensing units area Chrysler.

    Spacepak.

We have installed a lot of spacepak systems with excellent results.I can only speak to the spacepak but I am sure Unico and High velocity are very similar. The secret to a good system is to install the maximum number of outlets per ton rather the minimum and to do a complete heat gain.Generalizations based on square footage are fine for estimating but are NOT suitable for installation.Get references, this a whole new ball game and the old rules don't apply.

    AC

We use Space-Pak successfully. Due to the cost, they get used mainly where space is limited. Use standard stuff when space is not an issue. Unless customer specifys.

    Mini Split

Another system are mini splits. They use a outdoor condensor and tubing(line set) is ran to individual indoor cooling heads that mount high on the wall. Good units are almost silent and the others are very quiet... Another to look into

    spacepak

can anyone tell me where to get good info on sizing these units for older large homes ie: sun rooms, large stairwells, and cathederal ceilings. Info on the web site is kind of general and has anyone used their new plenum tubing.

You must do a heat gain to figure out what size unit to go with.
