\"Creative\" venting

A potential new customer had our company over today for a quote on making his ancient boiler heat-worthy. I couldn't help but notice that the gas-fired hot water heater had 4" flexible dryer vent (aluminum) going into to the chimney. I asked him who installed the heater, but I already knew the answer (hint: the intitials are H.D.). Sleep tight, Homer.

    I've seen that

A couple of times already. I've also seen z-flex liner run to the 3 ft long b-vent that went through the roof from the water heater 12 ft away. It looked like a camel :o

same matierial as chimney liners. it's ok as long as there is proper clearance to combustables and pitched

    Same Material?

Product sold as a Chimney Liner is backed by the manufacturer, and is Listed by a recognized agency, for its intended application. Criteria imposed for Listing include thickness of material, permissable alloys, joint/lock design, bend radius, puncture resistance, thermal performance and adaptablility to appliance flues. Don't believe you have the same backing if you use dryer vent as a combustion vent.

umm....I hope the liner doesn't have that horrible seam that unzips if you look at it wrong...

    right.....

Sure it's the same material, ALUMINUM. The "sameness" ends at 1/2 the wall thickness and NO approval for this application. When was the last time your Dryer vented at 450F ? I'm betting your wife would howl about THAT shrinkage !

I saw home HD install hydronic expansion tanks on domestic line to water heater on three occassions.
