Hole in chimney

I have a 3 inch hole in my chimney for the flue pipe from an old water heater, which I will be removing. The tile pipe extends about a foot in to the chimney. How can I close the hole? I though of using cement. Is there any other way?

Do you mean cement in place with regular morter mix or with some type of caulk?0 -
Either will do
I use silicone mostly. WW

Couldn't they also just use mortar to fill the thimble without the cap (or if the thimble is in good shape just put a cap in the thimble if it fits tight).
I think the upshot is you need to fill it with masonry or metal but how you do that isn't all that critical.
