Which pipe dope to use?
Luis
Member Posts: 20
Hello,
Which pipe dope should I use in redoing my near boiler piping as to avoid steam leaks? I purchased pro dope (gray) from Home Depot as it was listed to be used in steam. However, when I was removing the incorrectly installed piping, I noticed that the pipe dope used was white and with a thicker consistency than the one I purchased.
Thanks
Lus

Pipe Dope...
EXPANDO.......See thread below..Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -

Robert,
Would you recommend expando for 2" and 3" pipe? I read the thread and it appears that tread lock with teflon tape as well as expando is used on larger size piping like 4" and 5".

If you use "EXPANDO", the fitting will never leak nor will you ever take it apart, EVER! If you never did this kinda work before, you should stick with some other brand for it will be quicker and easier to fix mistakes..Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -
Try
Leak-Loc with a couple wraps of teflon and thats that. I promise you no leaks.0 -
You mean the white teflon tape, correct? Not the yellow type.0 -
dope
there are alot of dopes out there. leak lock is ghood on most chemical progressing, expando is good for something that does not expand and contract. most teflon base dope will do just fine.0 -
YES
Yes, the white teflon tape.0 -
Pipe dope
I have not had good luck with Pro Dope on steam. Hard set Rectorseal has worked. I am not sure of the Rectorseal product number as they have a number of formulations. Laco Slictite Teflon dope has also worked. In a pinch I have used a combination of white teflon tape and Rectorseal soft set with good results(Tape first and coat with RS). Expando is very good, but is not readily available around us. At least not among our patronized supply houses.0 -

On steam over 2 1/2 i use lampwick 2 strands and grip lite or regular grip have used this method for 20 years and hardly ever have leaks lamp wick remenber that stuff around way long time and you know something the stuff works, in germeny i saw heating tech using hemp fiber and paste of some sort they swore by that stuff .But lampwick has never fail a little more time consuming but on big stuff i believe it's the best peace clammyR.A.
