Question on Burnham Power Vent Boiler

Boston
Boston Member Posts: 71
Man, what a mess. We just bought a old (1895) Victorian just North of Boston. Has a Burnham Independence Power Vented Boiler. Fan runs constantly and is LOUD. Is this supposed to be this way?

We are moving the house on the same lot and I need someone to remove the boiler and piping and reinstall in the new basement 30 feet away.

Any and all help is appreciated.

When they put in the new boiler they put in a new 80 gallon superstor, which is great, but they did not remove the existing gas fired hot water heater. Why would they not remove the old heater? Does that make any sense? I guess I need someone to take a look at the whole system and see what is the best plan - there is no sense in moving the mess I have to the new basement.

    sounds like

You need to locate a professional in your area to come in and do a full system inspection! As to the removal of an old system, it could very well have been that it was not part of the installation price. I would start up under "find a professional" and go from there. Good luck!!
  • What do you mean by

Loud? Where are you hearing this noise. The induced draft fans on the INPV power vented steam boilers are extremely quiet. Unless the power venter you are referring to is an aftermarket type such as a Field or Tjernlund power venter. If this is the case, I would suspect something is amiss with that item. Is this an Independence Steam or Hot Water boiler? If it is hot water, then the venter is not built into the boiler and is an aftermarket item. Hope this helps.

    Glen,

I hear the noise in the first floor. It is a steam unit and the fan is integral to the boiler. The fan runs continuosly which to me seems strange.

  • If you hear

the fan vibrating, it is probably resonating through the vent pipe. Is the 3" stainless vent pipe supported or hung from the floor joists? If it is, this is probably the source of the noise. This of course will be corrected when the house is moved. Curious though.....are you also moving the steam pipes when you move the house? Usually the movers relevel everything when they put old houses on new foundations. This may throw off the pitch of your pipes since older homes have sagged a bit through their life.

    that's why

I need a steam guy to install the old system in the new house........plus, not sure all the old pipes will come apart...looks like there is a hartford loop i have never seen before, etc etc...etc, etc,,,

I think the fan in the boiler must be toast, it is very loud, i did not beleive that could be how it came from the factory. does the fan run constantly, or is it only supposed to come on when the boiler runs?
