More soot ....

from a new referral. It seems she has a sooting problem throughout her home that has been getting progressively worse over the last year or so.

The point is that she just had another local company out there 2 weeks ago. That technician told her she needed a "new heat exchanger" on her FHW boiler (20 yr. old Burnham), told her it was rolling out, making CO, and spreading soot through the air.

Well ... she wasn't being forced into the $5000 bill for the "new heat exchanger", plus extra for an air cleaning system ... so they left ... heh ... "Call us if you need us or if you have any questions..."

No real explanations, no checking the boiler for soot, no CO warnings, no gauges or instruments, no attempt to even sell a CO detector ...

This customer is now living elsewhere until the situation gets corrected per order of the fire department. I'm going there tomorrow morning.

Just pisses me off....... the other company is a real bunch of finger pointers too.

OK I feel better now

Look for candles in the house - especially the big ones in glass jars. Last year I had a complaint of soot throughout a client's house. There was even soot inside the refrigerator. The source turned out to be scented candles that HO claimed were burned "rarely".

    Dingo,

Also check to see if the basement is dirt or unsealed concrete. With moisture and humidity, I've seen So Called"soot marks" going up the walls behind Baseboards and radiators. Seems the moisture traps the dust/dirt and makes it look like soot right above the terminal units. Most common in dirt basements. Also, the candle thing is big! Another one I saw could only be traced to the nearby powerplant. Seems the owner liked to open the windows everyday with the heat on, and the "effluent" from the coal fired plant across the harbor was depositing soot on poorly insulated and moist areas. (you could see all the roof rafters without a stud finder, as they were cool).Don't forget any fire places! I've also seen folks who thought they were opening the damper, but in fact were closing it.

Let us know what you find. Best of luck. Chris
