........they used to do with steam!

My wife took me to Mystic Seaport today. They had the 13th annual steam and antique engine show.

They had trailers full of early outboard motors, what a collection. Steam donkey engine, the guy told me each piston was about 30 ton of power x 2 = 60 x 12:1 gear reduction. They just slip a rope around the pulley a couple of turns and with a little tug you could lift a house!

You think we're nuts about heat? These collectors are out of control. You gotta see it tomorrow 9-3 at the seaport. Makes kinda wanna hook up a steam boiler in the basement so I can play with stuff.

    They have a similar museum

at Kinzers, PA, just east of Lancaster, at the Rough & Tumble Engineering Historical Society. I went there Friday with The Lovely Naoko but we didn't take any pics.

You can see steam engines that used to power lineshafted factories to ammonia compressors- running! Also huge stationary gas engines that had similar uses. Then there's whatever the show exhibitors brought- everything from steam-powered tractors to lawn mowers and small pumps.

We had a great time- TLN had never seen anything like it.

    RON,

My wife just started working in the membership office this summer. She got us tickets for a 2hr Dixieland band cruise. We went 3 wks ago on our anniversary.

Ed, the fireman or engineer I don't know his real title gave me a pretty thorough description of everything. He has been working there 12 yrs. You couldn't have asked for better weather it was almost perfect.

    Frank

They had a truck mounted temporary boiler they must have hired for the weekend. It was oil fired and I think it was operating at 50 psi. They had reducing stations and some of the stuff was operating at 10 psi.

These guys machined most of their own parts and made scale model engines. I wish I took more time and asked more questions. It was pretty crowded and these guys seemed to be absorbed in what they were doing.

    And

a steam boiler to supply the main food pavilion- looks like an old vertical water-tube unit. It's like walking back thru time- just like we do in old houses.

If I'd known you were going I would have tried to meet up!
