small oil boiler ideas

I was sent to a call today. Found a Teledyne Laars oil boiler in a crawl space. This unit was 15 plus year's old and is basicly falling apart. The homeowner is looking for a replacement and I just out of curiosity was wondering about a number of different unit's. Just wondering if anyone has any idea's of a small "oil" fired boiler. It cannot stand any taller than 30" and must be rear flu. Not much to ask for right?

One idea and don't laugh, I've actually done this!

Put one on it's side and mount the burner correctly. I'm not that smart I took the idea from a multi-position furnace.

BTW. If you remove the jacket, you can just wrap one in a pink panther blanket.

    Not my first choice

However, I worked in a crawl myself today. It had a Crown Freeport triple pass rear flue h.w. boiler. Similar to a Viessman, as Sid over at Crown told me, for about 1/2 the $$$$. Never installed or was crazy about Crown, but now for the purpose it was serving I'll have to keep it in the back of my mind. Block is German made at the same foundry as Viessman(Sid at Crown told me that too). It was there because it fit nicely. Swing open front door made it easy to deal with. Not sure about 30" height. Crownboiler.com should be able to help you though.Just an idea.

just visited Crown websight. The Freeport is 26" high. Sounds like a match made in heaven. Good luck

Yeah, as long as the OEM okays it. Believe it or not,

there's nothing in ASME Section IV or the codes that prohibit it.

    There's a couple

But how long to get them? Biasi B10 or SG 29 3/4"
NY Thermal Odessey 30", Buderus G115 30 3/8". Crown Freeport might be the cheapest and easiest to find at a supply house.

    interesting?

To put a boiler on its side SEEMS ok. In my minds eye I see refractory covering the crown sheet....isn't this the primary heat transfer point? I think reconfiguring the chamber would be in order on this one. Draft should be the next consideration. Seems the sections would be more taxed while on its side, possibly decreasing the life of the vessel. I'm curious what the mfg think of this......good idea though.

    Thermodynamics

TD had a boiler that was a cube of 26" high as I remember it. It was actually the old Blueray BR boiler with a yellow flame Carlin or Beckett burner. Horizontal tube with front flue outlet. I do not know if it is still available. worth checking.

Forty lashes with a wet noodle, then a kick or 2 to the head for EVER bringing that POS to the board!!!!(just kidding!)

No. It's not worth checking. The only use for this hunk of steel is to fill it with cement, and use it for a mooring block.(it will only last 3 years at THAT!)

Can you tell I might have run across 1 or 2 of these in my time? More leakers than a stick could be shaken at. Unless you want to spend a lifetime testing the available water, go with the Crown. I did on one job, and have never regretted it. Chris

    don't hold back..

LOL..just kidding. I believe the intention if one can be found at this point is to use the Crown. Thanks to everyone for their idea's...:)
