To read the posts it's like Mark & Darin are the only one who do the job right. That's what they want us to believe.
First off I read no mention of a safety check on the cad cell, I feel this is paramount. I've seen a lot more 'run away safety controls' than CO probs. Secondly, there is a high sulpher content in New Englands Fuel oil supply.
So if there is a mal adjusted oil burner, which there should not be if guys are doing proper PM and using the "Bacharach suitcase" there will be an acrid odor from the "SOX and NOX." To pinpoint one thing about oil burners is narrow minded. By the way, the maintenance is the real culprit. I was taught to do clean-outs the way # 39 does them. I've never had a CO related problem. Maybe we should just blow off all PM, do a 'rag and tag' and ONLY do a CO test. After all, the expensive equipment has to earn us something or are we all so altruistic that moneys no longer why we're in this trade. This argument is detrimental as we all feel the same way, we just articulate it differently. Noone is saying "Don't do a CO test."
The CMR527 clearly ststes a 'combustion test SHALL be done'
Until that changes I will do the job that I've been doing and will expect the same competent results I've been getting for 22 years.

Maybe?
Many oil companies just don't test. Most companies don't perform the cleaning the way #39 did (I think that was his number)Many just don't know how. I have an idea that will surely pi$$ off many oil (full serve) companies. Independent third party (mandatory?) testing. Many oil companies don't perform these tasks well because they have an economic incentive to sell more oil, the dirtier and out of adjustment equipment is, the more oil they sell. Just a little fuel oil for the fire..Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -
Were you testing for CO 22 years
IF not then how would you know? nuff sed'0 -
Selling More Oil
I'm sure there are exceptions but I really feel not testing to sell more oil is a fallacy. The techs I know who do not test are lazy, ignorant, arrogant, or all of the above. Mainly it is lazy or arrogant.

unfortunately Bob has a point
I know first hand of a local company's primary goal is mal-adjusted oil burner equipment. Selling oil is the #1 reason for this. They hire unlicensed guys for their
service and installations. I think this is dispicable!!0 -
a little credit
There are companies (I presently work for one) who demand quality work. I have worked for two of the largest companies in NH/Maine/Vermont and they both demanded this. They like all other companies wish to sell oil, that's the buisness. BUT if myself or any other tech were to be found slacking or just fudging then we would be working elsewhere. And I work in the unregulated state of NH! I agree there are companies who don't care but don't lump all in because they are a "big oil company", just make's us all look bad in the end. And in reference to third party testing, how much do you really think a home owner is willing to pay to have a service done? On top of which, if someone is slacking off that bad and get's buddy buddy with the "3rd party" then you have the same quality at a higher price...who win's on that?0 -
I'm not categorizing
I've worked for some quality companies. Although I listen to the bosses, I feel I'm there for the customer. Got plenty of tips and was requested frequently. Am not lumping all fuel oil dealers as unethical. I'm merely saying that there are certainly some unethical oil co's!0 -
PLEASE, everyone....
Read back to the CO and OIL post.
The remarks I made, I mean.
Stop slamming each other! We're all in this for the good of our customers. We all just happen to feel that some things are FAR more "cut and DRY" than others.
Listen to your peers, and LEARN from them . There are more people than "us" , coming to LEARN. These could be your CUSTOMERS, or your peers. Please consider the CUSTOMER.
To quote Abe Lincoln....Better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth, and remove all doubt. Chris0 -
Amen, time to move on!

Is it true
that you were there to hear it, Chris.

HA HA HA,
No Jackchips, but the words ring true.
I may be old, but I ain't THAT old. (although, I might ask our esteemed host the same question. I think he passed through some "Time warp", to keep us all CIVIL, and it MAY have been during a WAR...,but I'm not sure). Chris0
