york bulkhead
curiousity kills
Member Posts: 118
Has anyone ran across a York gas furnace with a crack in the "bulkhead". I have seen several with a small hairline crack, would this be considered a cracked heatexchanger? It seems to me this bulkhead is only a shield and not the clamshell itself. Each system I have seen like this I have done digital combustion tests in the air and flue and have not found any problems. Any feedback would be helpful.

I'm assuming you mean the front "vest plate". I have seen cracks there and generally have had no problems. The exceptions are an atmospheric gas furnace if the cracks are close to the burners. Extraneous air from the blower stream can cause pilot outages, lock outs, as well as ignition problems. These plates are usually still available from York unless they are very old. Furnace cement can temporarily patch them.0
