Need help re: boiler replacement

Does the boiler leak? Some times old boilers get so loaded up with sediment, they need to be replaced.

Hi,
I think I posted to the wrong place, so let me try again.
I just bought (a weeek an a half ago) a 1946 built 8-plex with gas-fired boiler heat.
I have been told that it needs to be replaced, but from some possibly unbiased persons.
How do I know for sure that it needs to be replaced? And, should I replace it with another boiler, or some other type of heat.
Obviously, the most cost effective way is important, since I just bought the place.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
