what can I expect

Gentlemen,
Refused to go on a steam boiler replacement for my current employer. I didn't approve of what was being done and did not want to have to look the Pastor in the eye afterwards, so I bailed out. Its a church steam boiler replacement gas to oil. The "brains" in the office left the old boiler in the pit asbestos and all. Left five 3" zone valves in the ceiling in place. Didn't bother to measure the lowest steam piping with regard to the water line ("A" dimension). But I did, and its as low as 14" in three or four places. Half the building is single pipe and half is 2 pipe. Half the returns dump into a condensate receiver and half don't. As if thats not bad enough, its four Weil gold 5 sect. piped as a multiple boiler system and they all are sporting Riellos. All the smoke pipe dumps into a mutual 10" pipe with a draft inducer. When the inducer comes on, am I mistaken to think that the positive pressure needed for the Riellos will not be there? Aside from the systematic problems I am anticipating, does anyone think the Riellos will operate properly? Any and all input on any of the above will be greatly appreciated I have a feeling this job will need a spare bedroom for me as I think I will be living there. The upside is I can go there and get the congregation to pray that this job works and go to church at the same time. HELP!!!

    Exorcism needed

I think those members of the congregation who live near the church won't need alarm clocks on Sunday morning...the anvil chorus from the boiler room will wake them just fine.

I'm pretty sure a barometric in the smoke pipe between the boilers and the inducer will keep things steady. But check with the respective manufacturers first.

will the barometric defeat the purpose of the inducer. Further, how do you set up the damper. Wont the draft change as each boiler comes on line??? Will draft be different with one boiler running as opposed to all four running? Is it just me or does this sound like a mess?
  • Just checked

the Weil Gold specs , and they state that it is designed for natural draft firing , and to connect it to a vertical chimney . I'm not sure if this precludes using an inducer though . Draft over fire should be negative .01 to .02 .

Can the inducer be set to run at different speeds ? Sounds like theres gonna be alot of tweaking with all the dampers and inducer . Did you run em all at once and take a draft reading , then run just one and take another reading ? Do they all have dampers ?

Looks like you got your hands full over there Tommy , good luck in this challenge .

I understand that the Weil specs call for -01/-02 however the riellos call for pos. pressure. Is there a middle of the road here? Or will one always cause a problem with the other. I'm just trying to prepare myself here. Although I refused to deal with the install I know I'll eventually be forced into the basement here. When the company runs out of nozzle changers it will all fall on me. And since I dont get much hands on Riellos I would like to go in with at least a little confidence. Thanks

The Riellos will literally push flue gasses thru the boilers. They create positive pressure on their own. It shouldn't be an issue getting the flue gasses thru the boilers, even with all running at the same time. The -.01/-.02 negative draft over the fire is to allow the heat to stay in the boiler as long as possible and still get evacuated with a natural/forced draft. You will have a hard time getting the draft right from best case to worst case. In this scenario you might be best to set up the draft for all running at the same time and hope for the best when they are not. What I would concern myself with is getting the flue gasses up the chimney. This is where the draft inducer comes into play.

    Good luck
  • Which Riello

calls for positive pressure only ? Are they the BF series ? We've been installing F3 , F5 , F10 , and the older Mectron series in negative pressure boilers ( including the Gold ) for decades . Nothing but excellent results .

It's been a looong time since I read the instruction manual , but I recall that they want the pressure as close to 0 as possible , but a slight negative or positive pressure is acceptable . I think they also state that the instructions for the boiler take precedence .

    Good Luck

obviously you need to address the piping.

Each appliance should have it's own draft regulator.

    Regards

    Draft inducer?

Does it dump into a chimney or is it side wall vented?
