Didn't he have to be naked to count to 21? ( Not the way to be in a pipe plant!)

I know, so bad, but I bet there are at least a few chuckles. Chris

I personally don't know the answer...

...but I think I recall seeing a post like this one before on here. I am sure one of the nice fellows here may recall and fill you in.

But on another note...Why do you call football FOOTball?? The only time the foot touches the Ball (?? more so Egg), is when they punt it. Was "carry the ball" already taken?? lmao :)

And it's called football so that guys from Europe who don't know their essays, and won't give up more than one jacket, will ask silly questions:)
    (BTW, the classes were awesome)

This is what I had hoped for

Intelligent, well thought out answers :)

So basically Nobody knows why ?

Its gotta be one of those quaint storys like, the company that used to make pipe had a garage that was 21 feet long.

How about the first houses had trees that where 21 feet long and they used them to build the house ???

    Anyone ?

    Bueller ?

Maybe the flat stock came in 21' lenths and they didnt want the extra step in cutting off a foot so they left it 21'.

    There, thats my guess.

    Just a guess.....

....but I thought I read somewhere once that the reason for 21' lengths was that the manufacturers assumed that the ends would get dinged up in transit, so you'd end up having to cut off a foot of pipe to get good clean ends - leaving you with a 20' piece of pipe?????????

    Scott. UK pipe.

Black pipe is 6.6 Meter lenths here in the UK, the plot thickens ! !
I have always wondered about that also?

    I remember

something here on the wall a couple years back. I think it discussed the "merchant couplings" that came on one end of the pipe too.

I can't find the answer, I'm sure some one knows and they are waiting to see more of our stupid guesses

    21 ft

When pipe was made of wood they would drill a hole from each end of the lenth and each fellow could efficently drill 10'6" before they had problems, hence 21'

I was at the Plumbing Museum in June !!

    21 ft. pipe

cause 22 ft. was too long and 20 ft. too short for whatever reason.

I always figured it's because I always have to cut both ends off the darn thing!

way back when they were boring the holes by hand, 10'6" was about all they could do from each end

    21' Trivia

"For many decades gas lines were done with cast iron (black) pipe, and water lines with galvanized pipe, and that was that. One of the ways it stayed thus was that black pipe was supplied in 21-foot sticks, and galvanized in 20-foot sticks. That's just how it was, and building inspectors had a good way to tell if a contractor was trying to cut a corner by painting galvanized pipe black."

    Sounds sensible to me.
