I just have a couple of ?'s . I was sent on a no heat ,annual service and inspect for contact call today and discoverd that the boiler was out of oil so i dump 20 ga1lons did the annual service filter, nozzle , strainer, clean flues, ect. Now its time to prime the pump.I got no fuel, ive seen many people change fuel pumps for that should not be changed so i didnt want to do that .Now all the valves where open so it was sugested to me to take some oil and put it into the inlet port for this will help it pump .It worked! Now has anyonelese ever hear of this ?and i was also told that most weilMclain have a little back draft because of their small combustion chambers is this true?

Jaybee,
There are a number of oil pump gauge kits around that will allow you to suck in a little oil to prime the pump and measure your nozzle pressure and pump cut-off. Sid Harvey and other suppliers have them, they answer alot of questions when you come to a no-heat call. A draft gauge will help you determine if the chimney is working or if that "back pressure" is a boiler that needs cleaning.
I hope this helps.

Just out of curiosity
Why did you change the nozzle? Was it not working?

these new style pumps are some jim dandy POS.if you ask a boiler tech he will tell you that it is one of the first things they look at these days..;long time ago we never would simply condemm a pump. nowadays check the shaft...does it wiggle?its often a suprise when it just comes right out of the pump....! oh Hurray! just what a guy needs..if it is broken you know the routine.0 -
Oil
If there was still a degree of restriction in the oil line, the oil that you primed the pump with probably just gave the pump something to grab on. I would still look at the oil system for restrictions.
Another possibility is that the fuel pump may just be worn enough that it needs the fluid within it to make a seal strong enough to pull with.0 -

weil mclain backdraft?????
Not true. Weil boilers (residential) should all run with negative pressure over the fire. If you have backpressure or positive draft over the fire, it's either flue or boier pass restriction or you have too much fire in the box (nozzle size or pump pressure adjuctments or too much air)
I hear a lot of guys blame the boiler for their inability to solve problems. Don't get caught up in that. All makes or boilers are general alike and always follow manufacturer's recommendations on nozzles, pump pressures and set up info. It's the easiest way out of a problem. Go back to the basic fundementals and set it up the way it was designed to run, and you'll make life a lot easier on yourself.
