how many of you have installed tubing for a snowmelt in or below asphalt, i have looked at wirsbo's design drawings, so how does the paving co. like this. i have more people asking for snowmelt under paving, we try to steer them towards concrete or pavers, just seems like it would be a major pain in the a** to do in asphalt, but any good tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks, marc

    Asphalt

We've done only one- 4000 sq. foot. We tied the tube to mesh and had them put the asphalt over tubes with cold water running through it. The asphalt didn't hurt the tube at all. I think there was some issue with the stones going in the asphalt mix, not sure. Anyway this system has run for the last two winters in Buffalo NY and I swear it melts faster than my concrete jobs. In fact we are driving it with only 2-M199 Munchkin boilers. I would normally size with more BTUs but it grew at the last minute. That is tip #1. They never stay the size as quoted. At the last minute they always seem to grow. The asphalt was wheel barrowed in place and then hand tamped. After the first layer set they used machines.

    Is it very important...

...to protect the slab from thermal stresses with Ashphalt? I would suspect so. So Mixing would be required for slab deltaT protection.

    What did you do?

    Regards,
