switching realy RA89A voltage readings
I ask this vet a ? about what reading would i get if there was a call for heat and i put my meter across terminals 3 @ 4 if there is a jumper between term. 1 @3 I was thinking that i will not get a reading becuase there isno potential diff between the terminals 3@4 if i am wrong please explain it to me so i could understand being that he has been doing this so long hes probally right ,but i just need to clear up my understanding.0 -

You are correct, the meter should read 0. If you touch one lead to #2 term. and one lead to #3 or 4 it should read 110-120 volt(+/-) You could also touch one of the leads to ground or the metal box or BX and read the voltage.
And if you remove the jumper from 1+3, you can use 3+4 for 24 volt or an end switch.
Please don't take this wrong, but sometimes I think you ask really basic questions. DON'T STOP asking if you don't know. But it makes me wonder about your employer and the level of training he is making available to you. It sounds like you just got thrown to the wolves and you have to fend for yourself. It ain't right, trial by fire is not always the best way to learn.
Are there any night schools or apprentice programs in your area? NAOHSM , RSES, PHCC, are organizations that offer training to some extent. Try the oil tech talk site. Don't get discouraged and don't take me the wrong way I have a strong belief in education. I hope some one takes you under their wing and sets you in the right direction. Good luck, and don't stop asking.0 -

Oh and by the way i am new to the feild and no mech background.I will go as far as to say that 7 months ago i didnt know what a pipe wrench was.So u will probally hear alot a basic stuff from me just dont get frustrated with me try and help me out if u can. Please, thanks.0 -
jaybee, what did the vet
tell you the reading would be?
If you have a jumper between 1 and 3 and a circulator connected to #4 and the circulator is connected to ground then from 3 to 4 is nothing more than an open switch (clappers) when the thermostat is not calling and you would read 120 volts, the meter completes the circuit and it becomes the load potential, the circulator will not start because the amperage after going thru the meter is not adequate to energize the motor.
With the thermostat calling you will read zero because it is then a closed switch and electricity will take the path of least resistance which is thru the switch.0 -
He said 120volts .0 -
jaybee, the vet is right
you will read 120 volts.0 -
Sorry Bill I did not
read his post completely but I did cover both calling and not calling in my post. If the t'stat is calling you would read "0" volts.0 -
jaybee, Bill corrected me
I did not read your post completly. If the t'stat is calling you would read "0" volts sorry about that.0 -
Thanks Tim
I knew that0 -
KEEP.........................................................
asking it is very refreshing to find someone who really wants to learn and it is my pleasure to help in any way I can. Good luck and keep learning.
