gas water heater question?
curiousity kills
Member Posts: 118
I am working on a bradford white power vented nat gas water heater the hot surface lights the pilot but the burners do not ignite the pilot will just sit there.
The control is in the gas valve I believe it is a smartvalve? If you remove the wire clip from the valve to diagnose it obviously wont do anything.any help on diagnosing this would be great....

Does the igniter
shut off. If it does not then your microamp signal is not getting back to the control. Are you sure this is a 24 volt Smart Valve Igniter system? Most water heaters use a 120 volt igniter with a power venter. Let me know if you can as that makes a difference as to where we go next.0 -
I am not sure at this point if it is 24 or 120? I am wondering how you would even check the microamp signal because if you unplug to check the igtion would stop. Do they expect you to cut the wire and test inline?0 -
Do not cut the wire
there is a test harness that can be used to test the microamps. If you look inside is the igniter still glowing when the pilot is lit? If it is then remove the burner and either clean the flame rod or replace the igniter assembly. Try cleaning first.
The SmartValve Flame Measuring Kit Part # is 395466.
The igniter assembly is Q3400A-1008
Some SmartValve Model numbers would help me to help you.0 -
smart valve
Thanks for the info on the valve and the I took the number you gave for the flame measuring kit. This is a brand new bradford white natural gas 40 gallon water heater we installed on thursday the customer called with no hot water on saturday.Itook a look at it and I am returning on monday I cant imagine it is dirty but it could be. I will follow up with you in couple days but I do appreciate the help in the mean time so having the right info and part for troubleshooting in the future.0 -
Keep us posted
we are curious to know how you make out!!!0 -
It is not igniting, only the pilot is staying lit, Is the power venter running non-stop?0 -
Yes the powerventer continues to run while the pilot just sits there0 -
Does the igniter
continue to glow or does it go out????0 -
I am not sure at this time I was there yesterday I know the pventer was running because I could hear it but do not recall if the igniter continued to glow. What would that tell you in either situation??????

On SmartValve
24 volt pilot ignition if the pilot is lit and the igniter is still glowing it means you have a flame proving problem and need to clean the sensor or replace the igniter assembly as I told you before.0 -
If the
power ventor is on and th e pilot lights, but no main gas, check the polarity. reverse polarity will let the pilto light, but nothing else. The rectification system is lookign for a DC+ signal. That wont happen if the polarity is reversed.
