insulation

I am currently adding snap plates to a staple up job that did not have enough heat. We removed the bat insulation from the ceiling and it looked like the builder cleaned out his shop all the insulation was R30 but some was foil back and some has paper back and others was newer style plastic. The home owner asked me if it is worth the investment to replace the insulation with all foil back or just put back what we removed, it was installed 2 years ago and still in good shape.

    Stick with the fiberglass

batts you have. really no need for foil faced with a plate system.

Pay attention to the rim joist insulation detail. This is where the heatloss is greatest and need careful attention. I like EPS foam installed with an expanding foam spray to seal all infiltration at this point.

If not foam, make sure you cut the fiberglass batts to fit in the rim joist bay and joist end bays tightly without compressing them.
