stop by your local music store and check out these two new CD's...just what you need after a tough week to help relax. "Fourplay", is the title & name of the group featuring Bob James on keyboards and three distinguished sidemen on bass, drums and guitar. Their take on Sting's haunting "Fields of Gold" will get your attention. Bob James has written lots of good stuff, most notably the theme from the TV show "Taxi" and the lost love classic "Storm Warning" sung by his daughter, Hillary.

The other is Diana Krall's new work "The Girl in the Other Room". Diana Krall (Mrs. Elvis Costello) is an absolute stunner of a performer. She has a way with a song that is totally unique. I can't really do her work justice with words, so just buy the CD and send the kids to the sitter or Grandma and listen to this with your wife or girlfriend! 'nuff said! Have a good weekend.

    Bill, as you would imagine,

    I have both.

I love Diana's other stuff - but found this latest CD to be less than equal of her past work. Very plain, unengaging, and heavily aimed at a non-jazz audience; which of course, is precisely why it will, in all liklihod, sell like crazy.

I believe I have every CD Fourplay ever made. I was absolutely floored by Chaka Khan's rendition (with Nathan East) on the "Between The Sheets" tune. That dark, husky, contralto voice was just so earthy and funky; one of my all time CD's. Not a bad cut on the entire disc!

I caught them about 5 years ago at The Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. I also have stuff from Harvey Mason that goes back over 25+ years ago (Marching in the Streets)

And Lee's a trip. Met him and his piano player at the Blue Note in NYC about three years ago (sans FourPlay). Lee's pianist is Barnaby (Something - can't remember his last name) and is my daughter-in-law's uncle. He comes and we hang out - or used to. Haven't seen him in some time. West Coast cat. Barnaby states Lee practices 6 hours a day - whether or not there's a gig that niight or not. Seven days a week. He intentionally lays off for 2 weeks every summer and totally abstains from picking up the guitar. Then goes back into a 50 week "on" scene. Gotta love that kind of developmental dedication.

We gotta get together sometime soon. I know you live a little south of me. What town again?
