Buffer Tank

a system for a customer who had an unfortunate installation that did not work. The contractor to begin with oversized the boiler by 100% It is a Triangle tube propane fired combination heater. To cut down on short cycling I was thinking buffer tank. There is also a complaint of not enough domestic hot water, so I was thinking storage tank. Then I thought of using an inside out indirect water heater (Ergomax or Dunkirk Artesian) as both a buffer and a storage tank. Someone asked why not a Triangle Tube indirect since it is a tank within a tank. I don't know how much volume this would give me on the boiler water side. I found the Dunkirk Artesian has a 20 gallon boiler water capacity Does anyone have any experience or info concerning this situation? WW

and more info. The Triang;e tube boiler is running a radiant floor. The piping looks terrible and was not done correctly. I plan to make it a primary secondary set up with the Dunkirk indirect in series to provide thermal mass. The job had suspended tube clips but I did a heat load and it need Extruded aluminum plates. The HO will be installing them. It also used the foil bubble stuff for insulationunder the tubes. The basement ended up being warmer than the upstairs.

The TT Delta Combo's
have a 20gal domestic HW inner tank and about the same for the outter tank for the heating system. You're saying the combo is 100% too large and there's not enough hot water, how could it be short cycling? You might just want to get a storage tank for the DHW. An inverse indirect is usually wired up to a low mass boiler, but it sounds like the TT has the mass, but maybe the flow and the piping needs work like you said.0 -
It short cycles in the heating mode
The heat loss is about 100,000 btuh. The boiler input is 199,000. (Output 160 btu's so oversized by 60%. So I exagerated. Momma told me a million times not to exagerate.) Because it had too small heat emmitance because of the suspended tubing the water would heat up very quickly in the system but was not leaving the system. Quick build up. Short cycle. Esp. on moderate days. Upgrading to plates will help some but it is still way oversized. If inside hot water tank on combo heater is 20 gallons the btu's required to heat it would be 20 gals x 8.44 weight of water x 90 DT= 15,000 btu's if the output is 160,000 it should have ten times the capacity to keep the domestic water hot. I wonder if there is an isuue with the heater slowing heat transfer. I've never worked of them before but called for an installation manual today to edumacate myself. Mayby I only need a buffer and not the storage if thats the case. WW
