clueless
and concerned about the wrong thing. Yesterday, one of my co-workers inspected a pizza hut about a complaint of heat stress. (too hot working around pizza ovens. Can you imagine that?) So she's in the manager's office which had the hot water heater in it when it fires up. Literally!!! Flames whoosh out from the bottom and then retreat and he says "it always does that". Her CO meter starts creeping up to over 30 or 40 ppm or so and fluctuate with the cycling of the burner. Now, this manager's desk is about a foot away from this flame thower and he could care less. Anyway, the inspector sees that it does have a flue going up to the roof, but she's an industrial hygenist and not versed in the finer points of water heater combustion. Later in the day, back in our office she's telling me about this and says that they've got some serious exhaust fans for the pizza ovens. So with back drafting in mind, and not enough make up air, I suggest that she put in a call to the local AHJ and have them look at and hopefully red tag the thing. You might imagine that the building inspector and fire marshall that she got a hold of were VERY interested. They were immediately on the way there. How can someone sit next to this thing scorching your sox and not be even a little concerned? Good Grief.
Have a safe day,

People are so conditioned
They think that as long as there is heat or hot water or cold air or whatever......... "Well, it must be working OK right"?
DUH!!!!!
Like the boiler I posted about under "Now I have truly seen it all", with the fan tied into the circulator relay.0 -
Hey Weezbo
Thanks, I think. Really, you would be quite surprised at some of the stuff I see on a regular basis. I know what you mean though, some OSHA types get stuck on stuff like bad extension cords and such, but it's just like any profession, some folks are more aware of what they are supposed to be doing than others.
Take it easy,
Larry (from OSHA)

You find these things through divine intervention...me ..i am still working on accidential juxapositional inspiration:)0 -
Not just Pizza Hut!
Last year, several of our guys were eating at a Taco Bell. They could smell the products of combustion in the dining area and there was an awful lot of condensation on the glass. Several of our guys are volunteers with the City FD, but this was in an outlying TWP. They knew the FD Chief though & gave him a call.
Immediate response by the FD & they found CO levels way above anything considered "safe". Immediate shut down of the restaurant because the manager knew there was a problem and hadn't so much as called for service - for weeks. Wide open gaps in the rooftop unit's HX.

accidential juxapositional inspiration
excuse me!!!
I guess I need to read more!! I'm just lucky when I actually find something that could have some major impact on someone's life. Divine intervention, I don't know. We do what we do. Sometimes it actually makes a difference. I guess I'm lucky. Most folks I see want to do the right thing when they are informed.
So is it still light all the time up there in Alaska? Or do you have night?
