I`m looking for input on different manufacturers of variable speed air handlers since the brand our company uses will soon no longer be available( lennox am61v).

Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance Jim S

What is an am61v? Is it a commercial unit? Lennox makes variable speed residential air handlers.

It`s the companion piece that goes with their complete heat system which I guess they are no longer going to make, seeing as how there were so many problems with them.

What about hydro-air units with both hot water and a-c coils in them already.

The company I work for is a lennox dealer so another big name brand probably isn`t an option.

    Check out

The Clean Air Furnace from Nutech/Lifebreath. Variable speed ECM blower, excellent hydro coil built in, plus a 100cfm HRV all in one package. More money compared to a basic air handler but it's definitely not your basic airhandler either. www.nutech.com I think. It's a very good quality product which I've used extensively. I think Paul Pollets has a bunch of these out also.

Looks like there's a class-action lawsuit pending against "Complete Heat".

I thought they might have learned their lesson regarding putting inadequately field tested appliances into the mass market after the first generation or two of the "Pulse".

I guess they have enough market share, loyal distributors and corporate $$$ to make what appears to be another "technological cutting edge failure" nothing more than an accounting glitch.

    Think wet!!!!

Jim, I wasn't aware Lennox had a variable speed version for those Complete Heat units! Guess all I had seen installed around here were standard PSC blowers, but then our area Lennox dealer locally is a low-baller even when doing 'high end' work. In fact, they sell more Air-Flow brand (Lennox subsidiary, I understand) HVAC units than anything else (cheap is the word). The C.H. was a neat concept, but apparently had a lot of problems.

Swamp Mike- what is the suit over? Was it leaking tanks or were there other problems? There are not all that many installed in our area that I know of and I've never worked on one. Greg

Bryant and Carrier have been doing variable speed blowers for a long time.

Carier/Bryant has got one of the finest true VS blower systems out there, but no mataching hydro coils factory attached. I suppose one could always rig a hydro coil to the air handler, however. With a VS air handler, you would probably want a VS circulator to make certain proper flow through coil would match Delta T needs across coil for optimum performance. This would mean the air handler would have to communicate with the hot water source and circulator. If not, the supply air temps would vary as the quantity of air moving across the coils varied.

    Goodman AH series

has a 3 speed blower with built in hydronic coil, with circ pump and check valve. But I think it must be vertically mounted.

What you say makes a lot of sense to me. It would probably play with variable water temperature through the coils via outdoor reset as well. It's unfortunate that no manufacturer has engineered such a system.
