steam boiler

We got a call today to price out a replacement steam boiler. The existing coal converted unit was the size of a small garage and has already been removed by some demo contractors. This house was built in 1927 and is approx 15,000 sq ft. with close to 50 radiators. This would be my largest steam boiler to date. Obviously we will measure all the radiators and convert to edr. How will we know what the original water line was? What other specifics should I be asking and looking for? Thanks in advance for any tips, Todd

    big steam

As long as you can maintain minimum dimention "A" and keep the header at least 24" above the new water line, you don't need to know the old water line. Watch out for those old returns that might be hanging a few feet off the floor, or old wet returns that could be slow or plugged. Not to mention dry returns that don't maintain proper pitch. Some H.O.'s think that a new boiler will cure their system problems. All you are doing is replacing the boiler. By the way, what type?

    What type of steam system

is it? One-pipe? Two-pipe/air-vent? Vapor? If Vapor, who designed it (Broomell, Dunham, Hoffman, Trane etc, you'll find names on radiator valves, traps and any special equipment in the piping around the boiler)? This info will help us answer you properly.
