Remember that line from good old Rodney Dangerfield. I couldn't help think of his stuff today after my tale of irony. I quoted a pool heater system via a boiler for a customer. It was pretty elaborate do to the piping and wiring requirements and having to tie into the twin Viessmann boilers. The owner had a cheaper faster idea of how to do it but I thought it really wouldn't work well and told him so. Well he went with the other guys. Today I got the call about the project asking for help on how to get it all running. Now your thinking the call was from the house owner that's probably happened to you ,so your thinking ya big deal that happens to all of us. HaHaHaHaHa wrong!, The call was actually from the contractor that took the job from us!!! Wanting to know if we could straighten it out maybe talk him through it and figure out the wiring and control side of things. So has THAT happened to you guys? I told him I'd look into it and get back to him with some ideas on what to do. I'm such a **** somebody could write a country song about me.

    Unless you have.....

....a VERY good working relationship with this contractor, I would only do what he's asking for a fee. Probably an hourly rate based one at that.

It's bad enough that he low-balled you to get the job, but now he's turning to you for help?

I can't imagine having the stones to do that!!!!!

I'd be surprised if he knew what an FT module was or Switching Module V. Charge accordingly.

    happened to me...

Once. Low-baller called me at midnight in December. Simple boiler swap. Been reading the wiring diagram and instructions for 2-1/2 hours he says. Won't come on, he says. Keep reading, I said, and hung up.

    joel..

Charge to help him and let him and the customer know what your doing for THEM. I think you might have just gained two new customers. I (unfortunatly) do this all the time. When I leave from an estimate I kinda know I'm the most expensive. Some people like to get cocky when confronted with a price (many times double) what they were quoted, I simply tell them shake my hand and don't say anything your gonna regret for I may be the guy thats gonna come straighten out this mess.....Robert O'Connor/NJ

    :) True word Robert:)

it helps being able to recognize that there is someone who is the cheapest and some one who is expensive and to just run an old Chinese saying by ya ..Gui shr gui. Pian Yi bu Pian yi:)expensive is expenx=sive buh cheap aint cheap:)
How about this one some one gives the guy a bid for ten times what you bid....and then he calls your buddy to get you to come over and install it :))) oh its True...:)) proving the old adage that old age an treachery wins out over youth and ambition:)

Call the home owner and let him know whats going on. Tell him your more than happy to help, but the owner must pay you directly and not contractor.

I would think this would get you the customer, let him know that the lowballer dos'nt know what he's doing and why your price was what it was.

    Totally agree with Scott!

Deal with the homeowner, with permission of the contractor who reached out to you and who dropped the ball.

Go look at the mess, be reasonable in your estimate/charges to correct the mess and get an agreement in writing for your services.

This is neither a time to gloat nor one for retribution. It is an opportunity to show your professionalism and at the same time make some money and take some money off the table you were initially denied. Be as kind as possible to the contractor who low-balled the job.

Revenge is sweatest for the first 20 seconds. After that it becomes a lump in your throat for years.

Also be aware of what it took for the contractor without a clue - to reach out to one who does. IMHO, he has already redeemed himself to some degree already by virtue of this humiliating path he has selected.

Show him how much class you actually have.

    Joel,

It's simple, charge your net profit plus time invested and supply the info.

Why do it any other way?

No less a person than Abraham Lincoln once said,

A lawyers time is his stock and trade. It's the same with you buddy. It's what you know that makes you worth more than Joe Hacker. Practically anyone can hang and sweat pipe or connect two wires together. The trick is knowing which ones, what size, to where, with what etc. That's how you approach this one. Don't be vindictive or condescending, we all had to start somewhere. Help the guy out, show him the correct way and make a friend. If it were me I'd get the HO in the loop to educate him as to why you are worth more than the next guy. I'd also request that he pay you directly.
